In an already tense stand off, a federal judge has denied the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe their request for a temporary restraining order to stop the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline, as reported by CNN. The judge reached this decision after claiming the tribe failed to prove that they would quote suffer injury that would be prevented by any injunction the court could issue. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe is fighting to prevent the destruction of sacred sites due to the construction of the pipeline which means to run from North Dakota to Illinois through 2 other states. The project is set to cost 3.7 billion dollars and would carry nearly half a million barrels of crude oil a day. Thousands of people from over 200 Native American tribes are in support of the Standing Rock Sioux’s work to preserve their history while around 30 environmental groups have been outspoken with their opposition to the pipeline which draws concerns over environmental disasters especially around the Missouri River.

Global urbanization has lead to new challenges for urban planners aiming to reduce poverty and ensure sustainability. To overcome these challenges, we need sufficient data on a global scale. Xiaoxiang Zhu combines satellite and social media data with machine learning to generate a global model of all urban areas. Her models depict 3D shapes and illustrate the functions of buildings, as well as temporal changes, in cities. By providing open access to this data, Xiaoxiang's research group will enable broad impacts globally, from helping authorities improve slum conditions, providing evidence for a more accurate census, and numerous other end goals. Xiaoxiang Zhu is the professor for Signal Processing in Earth Observation at TUM. Xiaoxiang has always been fascinated by space and enjoyed solving mathematically demanding tasks as a child, which are perfectly entwined in the field of satellite Earth observation. Jusen Asuka talks about the “Fall and Rise of Japan’s Climate Policy”. Usually, the order should be “Rise and Fall” - however, the climate policy in Japan was only active for a short period of time (such as the Kyoto Protocol in 1997) and since then it has been very inactive/passive. Therefore, it needs to be revived now. He also shares some concrete proposals for Japan’s green recovery plan to revive. Jusen Asuka is a professor in the Center for Northeast Asian Studies at Tohoku University. He has previously worked for the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) in Hayama, Japan as the director of the climate change group. He has a Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo, an MBA from INSEAD. His primary areas of interest are energy policy, environmental policy, and international environmental/energy cooperation, and is also regularly involved in groups dealing with climate change in Japan. Doorae Shin fell in love with Hawai‘i as a freshman at the University of Hawaii’s Mānoa campus on O‘ahu. The state’s majestic mountains and breathtaking coasts captivated the East Coast

Doorae Shin fell in love with Hawai‘i as a freshman at the University of Hawaii’s Mānoa campus on O‘ahu. The state’s majestic mountains and breathtaking coasts captivated the East Coast native. But while walking through campus and around the island she noticed EPS foam (better known as Styrofoam) food packaging littering the streets and sidewalks. Shin soon learned about the devastating impact Styrofoam debris has on marine ecosystems. In the fall of 2012, with help from the Surfrider Foundation, Shin led a group of students on a petition drive calling for a ban on Styrofoam products on campus. The petition gathered 1,000 signatures and the university passed a resolution banning single-use foam packaging from all campus dining locations. Following this victory, Shin spent two years campaigning to get the state to ban Styrofoam products. When the initiative failed, she joined an effort pushing a county bill to ban Styrofoam on O‘ahu, which is also home to the state capital. Shin will soon start working as the first student sustainability coordinator for the University of Hawai‘i system.

Young, conservative, Catholic, and stewards of the earth: this growing group is speaking up on climate change. In a radio interview with Ohio News Network, CCLer Topher Anderson explains that it is his Catholic faith and the teachings of Pope Francis that guide him to work on climate change. Topher just met with his Republican members of Congress in March of 2021. He's asking them to take action on climate change, using solutions that are consistent with conservative values. Topher believes these values of small government and belief in American ingenuity are needed to craft solutions that will work for all of America. Will Topher and other young Catholics have success? They're working on growing their numbers and making their voices heard.
