In our politically polarized times, we may not always want to interact with those who have different viewpoints from ours. As lobbyists for a bipartisan climate solution, leaving our echo chambers is critical to achieving our mission. In this Braver Angels Town Hall progressives/liberals will hear from a diverse panel of conservatives and learn to appreciate common ground. You will leave with an understanding that bipartisanship is not just a given - it requires conscious effort from all. Dr. Bill Doherty is a Professor in the Department of Family Social Science at the University of Minnesota where he directs two centers relevant to today’s presentation: The Minnesota Couples on the Prink Project and The Citizen Professional Center. Following the 2016 U.S. Presidential election, he co-founded Better Angels, a citizen initiative to counteract political polarization and restore the fraying social fabric in American society. Jacob Abel is a spokesperson for RepublicEn.org and a former conservative outreach fellow with Citizens Climate Lobby. In these roles he has lobbied several congressional offices, published multiple op-eds, and appeared on new outlets such BBC, Vice-News, and NowThis. During his time in CCL he worked with chapters to help increase their conservative membership and hosted workshops on how to speak with Republicans about climate change. Steve Saltwick partners with Lynn Heady to catalyze the growth and the impact of the field organization (local Alliances and the 50 States) of Braver Angels. He co-founded the Braver Angel Alliance in Central Texas in 2018. He is a bio-psychologist whose career took a path through high-tech on six continents. He researches the guiding principles of the mammalian brain. He has published in SCIENCE but prefers to dote on his first grandchild and two border collies. Ron is a retired teacher from Denver Public Schools, is an Instructional Technologist and holds a Business BA from Iowa State in Industrial Administration. Ron credits being a Republican to his hero, Frederick Douglass, and he enjoys community service through volunteering, including that with Braver Angels. He also coached football, wrestling, and track for 30 years, and enjoys reading and writing. CCL State Coordinator for California, Elizabeth Fenner joined CCL in 2015 to help further what still seems like breathtakingly effective and fair policy. A teacher and researcher who is passionate about respecting all voices, Elizabeth has worked in and volunteered with schools, libraries, nonprofit organizations and community groups. He is the singularity expert at Singularity University and advises Blockchain Capital. Olympic Gold Medal Winner Jill Savery talks about her career in the field of sustainability, particularly sporting events and sports.  She is the Head of Sustainability for the America's Cup Event Authority. Her professional experience includes supporting sporting organizations such as the United States Olympic Committee, the London 2012 Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, the Chicago 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games bid team, the England 2018 FIFA World CupTM bid team, and several municipalities in the United States to embed sustainability into operations.

Throughout her life she has coached and mentored athletes for over two decades. Savery earned a Master’s Degree in Environmental Management from Yale University, and a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of California at Berkeley. In 1996, Savery won an Olympic gold medal in synchronized swimming, and was later inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame.

Savery speaks frequently on the topic of sustainability and sport to national and international audiences. There’s growing concern among scientists and the public about the environmental cost of the United States’ outsized appetite for beef. But there’s also a fierce political backlash against the suggestion that we reduce our beef consumption. These dynamics have everyone — from federal policymakers to local producers and big corporations — scrambling to broadcast new climate commitments on beef production, such as net-zero pledges.

In this conversation, food and climate experts will break down the climate science of beef and explore which solutions are most effective — and most needed — in climate policy and commitments. What’s the role for grass-fed and so-called regenerative beef in a climate-friendly food system? Where are the gaps in our ability to reduce climate emissions, and what are the limits and potentials of carbon sequestration, methane capture, carbon markets, consumer awareness and industry oversight? We’ll also discuss how culture wars shape the way we talk about, think about, study, and address climate impacts in beef production — and whether voluntary benchmarks can work under these conditions.

Dr. Jonathan Foley is a world-renowned environmental scientist, sustainability expert, author, science communicator and public speaker. He has published more than 130 peer-reviewed scientific articles, including in Science, Nature, and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. He is the executive director of Project Drawdown and holds a Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Dr. Matthew Hayek is an assistant professor of environmental sciences at New York University. He has presented and written numerous influential peer-reviewed papers on this topic broadly and holds a Ph.D. from Harvard’s John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Science, in addition to a degree in physics from Wesleyan.

Dr. Silvia Secchi is trained as a natural resource economist, geographer and transdisciplinary scholar. She is a professor at the University of Iowa in the Department of Geographical and Sustainability Sciences and Public Policy Center. A thoroughly published scholar in food, agriculture and policy issues, she holds a Ph.D. in economics.

In 2013, JP Viñals joined Activists Coming To Inform Our Neighborhood (ACTION), a leadership group in the Hunts Point neighborhood of South Bronx, NY. His aim was to further his knowledge about the environmental and social issues facing his neighborhood. Hunts Point houses New York’s largest food distribution center. This means an average of 15,000 trucks ply its expressways and streets on a daily basis, making the streets unsafe for local residents and causing immense air pollution. The neighborhood has some of the highest asthma rates in the country. Viñals was especially interested in creating green spaces to alleviate air pollution and in teaching youth how grow their own food. A year into his time with ACTION, he was voted president. He then focused the group’s work on championing a campaign to transform the defunct Sheridan Expressway into a vibrant boulevard. The 1.25-mile expressway restricts access to the revitalized Bronx River, new parks and the South Bronx Greenway. It forces trucks to drive through neighborhood streets and cars to idle in traffic, harming pedestrians and restricting safe biking. A long-running campaign, spearheaded by the Southern Bronx River Watershed Alliance, seeks to demolish the expressway and replace it with affordable housing, hospitals and green open space. Viñals’ group has been supporting the campaign by leading presentations about it at various South Bronx schools, attending town hall meetings, and organizing a first-of-its-kind youth summit focused on educating local youth and their parents about the environmental issues facing South Bronx.
