Alberta Canada Tar Sands

About This Collection

The spotlight is on oil sands development in Canada and it is a perfect storm of economic, social, and environmental realities, part fact, part fiction and promises - clearly affecting us all. It's a situation that calls out to citizens to educate themselves and listen to the voices of sustainability who are speaking from an integrated, whole systems understanding of our world and speak on behalf of Mother Earth.  Fundamentally, it's a place and from that place, home to indigenous peoles, comes the Keystone XL pipeline expansion project, which, if approved, would carry heavy crude from Alberta, Canada, to refineries in the United States.

The True Cost of Oil: Tar Sands by Garth Lenz

At TEDxVictoria, photographer Garth Lenz presents striking images of the Alberta Tar Sands mining project. His photos expose the environmental devastation and the beautiful ecosystems under severe threat.

For nearly two decades, Lenz has documented threatened wilderness and indigenous communities, with his work featured in leading publications. His photography of Canada's boreal region has contributed to establishing significant protected areas. A Fellow of the International League Of Conservation Photographers, his major Tar Sands exhibit premiered in Los Angeles in 2011 and toured New York.

This TEDxVictoria talk was filmed on November 19, 2011.
