The Nenets are nomadic reindeer herders in North-West Siberia, relying on their herds for food, clothes, transport, and shelter. They have migrated their ancestral lands for over a millennium. This region and its inhabitants now face severe threats from climate change, with rising temperatures accelerating the melting of Russia's ancient permafrost.

Siberia, stretching from the Arctic Ocean to Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and China, is immense. Covering 13.1 million square kilometers, it comprises 77% of Russia's land area but is home to only 40 million people, 27% of the nation's population.

First we filed an injunction, alongside the Tohono O’odham Nation and San Carlos Apache Tribe, to stop construction of wind-power transmission lines that are damaging sacred sites and harming the fragile San Pedro River, as captured in this video.

We also won a major victory with Navajo allies — and help from 7,000 supporters — against multiple proposed hydropower projects in Black Mesa. The projects would have depleted aquifers, destroyed prehistoric sites, and harmed Mexican spotted owl habitat, worsening problems caused by decades of coal extraction. This win also establishes a new nationwide policy giving Tribes veto power over permits targeting their land. Critics, including conservative politician Jaime Orpis, view Tompkins' 100km reserve as a national security threat, linking the Argentine border to central Chile. His anti-development stance also irritates a nation seeking economic growth. Despite calls for him to leave, Tompkins remains committed to protecting the park until the Chilean government assumes its preservation.

The flame was brought to Winnipeg, where Elder Dave Courchene lit the Centennial Flame at the Manitoba Legislative Building. It will burn for one year, inspiring the province and nation.

This sacred flame launched the 2017 Canada Games torch run in Manitoba and later lit the Games' cauldron.
