Better food systems are needed to take into account the wide range of complex interactions that affect the biosphere. We must work with nature, rather than against it. The Amazon region, a vital component of the living Earth system, is in danger of becoming savannah and has largely lost its ability to sequester carbon due to logging and agriculture, principally cattle raising, which damages the ecosystem. The preservation of peatlands requires a delicate hydrological balance. If too wet, methane is emitted, but if drained, peat emits carbon dioxide. #Permafrost melt is a threat to these fragile ecosystems. On September 12, WECAN held a virtual launch event for the report, "The Gendered and Racial Impacts of the Fossil Fuel Industry in North America and Complicit Financial Institutions (Fourth Edition).” 

From rising cancer rates to escalating violence, the report details the numerous disproportionate health and safety risks and impacts women in all their diversity are experiencing due to fossil fuel extraction, which is also perpetuating Indigenous and human rights violations. The report highlights regional case studies from Black, Brown, Indigenous, and low-income communities in North America, as well as the corresponding financial institutions that are contributing to these egregious harms. The report outlines recommendations for the banks to move toward accountability and a just transition. 

During the online event, we heard from frontline women leaders, health experts, and advocates who are demanding accountability from financial institutions to take action for the health of our communities, ecosystems, and the climate. Speakers included:

Ever thought about starting a Creation Care Team (CCT)? Steve Coleman and Roger Ingersoll from CCL’s Catholic Action Team will discuss challenges starting a new team as well as some examples of successful CCT projects and programs. Paz Artaza-Regan will then discuss the many CCT resources available from Catholic Climate Covenant to help get a team started, including meeting materials and sustainable facility suggestions, as well a how to advocate for faith-informed climate policies. Presenters Steven Coleman, Paz Artaza-Regan and Roger Ingersoll lead the discussion. Speaker Bios: Paz Artaza-Regan has worked as the Program Manager at Catholic Climate Covenant where she oversees the work of the Creation Care Teams network, the development of educational materials such as the Earth Day and Feast of St. Francis programs, and the monthly webinars. She began her career in the Environmental Justice office of the United Methodist Church, and has worked for Physicians for Social Responsibility and the National Religious Campaign Against Torture.She has a BA in international relations from George Washington University, a master's degree in international development from American University, and completed the course of work for a master's degree in community and regional planning from the University of British Columbia. She is originally from Santiago, Chile. Steve Coleman is a retired engineer and businessman. He has been involved with CCL and Catholic outreach for 6 years. Roger Ingersoll retired from ExxonMobil after 33 years where he worked on arctic, coastal, and offshore projects worldwide. During his career witnessed significant arctic changes since the 1980’s. Roger's been a member of Citizens Climate Lobby since 2016, is Co-group Leader and Grasstops Lead of TX08 Woodlands-Huntsville Chapter, and is also active in CCL’s Conservative Caucus, and Catholic Action Teams. Roger has five beautiful grandchildren, so his hope is that Congress enacts meaningful climate legislation as soon as possible to preserve their future.

Even though the Washington state Governor's campaign is now over, his laser-focus on climate and the environment was a notable departure from other Democratic candidates who regularly mention, but rarely prioritize the issue. A discussion with climate-focused candidate Jay Inslee leading up to the 2020 presidential election. In the second half of the show, Democrats have rallied around the Green New Deal and its lofty promise of a clean energy future. How will it realize its ambitious goals? Still unclear. But there can be no doubt that the tide of climate change awareness is rising among the nation’s voters. And more and more, as their constituents feel the effects of global warming in their own districts, Republicans find that they ignore the topic at their peril. “In every single community in this country, you are able to identify a few changes to the detriment of all as a consequence of a changing climate,” says Ryan Costello, former U.S. representative from Pennsylvania. Costello, a Republican, now manages Americans for Carbon Dividends, an advocacy group that is supported by oil companies and promotes a price on carbon emissions. “It’s gonna be the first election where it's a major issue,” predicts former congressman Carlos Curbelo (R-FL). “I don't support it, but we can thank the Green New Deal for that.” Still, even some Democrats have found themselves caught between the threat of a destabilized climate and other, more immediate, concerns. Christine Pelosi of the Democratic National Committee says that, from her perspective, the conversation is more regional than partisan. “It has a lot more to do with a couple of things,” she says. “One is the existential threat that climate change presents, and the other is the dialogue in which people from poorer communities - frontline communities, indigenous communities, mining communities, industrial communities - say, ‘well, it may be true that the ecology as we know it is going to change in a dozen years. But your change is gonna change my family's economy in two years.” As 2020 looms, many Republicans still fear that voicing support of climate solutions could torpedo their chances for reelection.
