Love Canal: Children and Toxic Waste | A Fierce Green Fire

The neighborhood called Love Canal in Niagara Falls, New York, was neither the first nor the worst toxic waste dump, but it became a national story in the late 1970s thanks to the organizing efforts of Lois Gibbs, who fought to protect Love Canal's children, including her own, from the 20,000 tons of toxic waste in the ground.

This is an excerpt from American Masters: Fierce Green Fire, airing April 22 at 9 pm on PBS. Learn more at www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters. Published on Apr 2, 2014

A 90-minute version of the film is currently available via Netflix and iTunes and on DVD from First Run Features.

First-hand Experience with Plastic in Our Oceans by Roz Savage
Static Preview

Roz Savage, British ocean rower and environmental campaigner, talks about plastics in our oceans, plastic pollution being called a "man-made global catastrophe" in the context of her first-hand experience with the scale of the problem as she rowed, solo, from San Francisco to Hawaii on the first stage of her Pacific Ocean crossing. Roz SavageMeeting up with the two scientists on the Junk craft, they shared dinner and their research with Roz several hundred miles east of Hawaii. Bottom line is we need to use less of it. Ocean Warming by Matt Brown
Static Preview

Matt decided to get a Geoscience single-subject teaching credential at UC Irvine, and after several years of teaching Marine Science (chemistry, biology, ecology, and other related topic concerning the world’s oceans) and ROP Environmental Horticulture (career technical education in using plants for beauty, shelter, and food) at Northwood High School (Irvine, CA), he became extremely interested in the connection between the food we eat and the negative impacts of modern agriculture on the health of the oceans (acidification, ocean warming, dead zones, etc.), so he telephoned his old Peace Corps friend Nathan.

In 1999, Matt and Bobbie Brown met Nathan McFall in a small village, Kuma-Dunyo, in Togo, West Africa. They worked with farmers, non- government organizations, and students introducing and implementing environmental awareness and education programs, soil conservation techniques, and animal husbandry.

In the summer of 2010, the Brown family decided to move to Oregon! They settled in Milwaukie (SE Portland, Oregon) and soon thereafter, with Nathan,  started the non-profit, Food|Waves.

Matt was interviewed by Ruth Ann Barrett of EarthSayers.tv, July 23, 2011 in Portland, Oregon.

Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill: 35 days from Space: NASA
Static PreviewThe MODIS instrument, on board NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites, is capturing images of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The spill began on April 20, 2010 with the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig. This short video reveals a space-based view of the burning oil rig and, later, the ensuing oil spill through May 24, 2010. The oil slick appears grayish-beige in the images and changes due to changing weather, ocean currents, and the use of oil dispersing chemicals. Images in the video time series were selected that show the spill most clearly. The full image archive is available on the MODIS Rapid Response Web site at http://rapidfire.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/
