Waste Figure (W): A figure of merit for the power-efficient (“green”) engineering of any device or cascade of circuits and systems. Despite a great need for the energy-efficient designs of circuits and systems, the electrical engineering field has lacked a clear, well defined metric for quantifying the power efficiency of any cascade of devices or systems. The industry does have such a metric for quantifying the additive noise along a cascade – it is known as the Noise Factor, or Noise Figure when given in dB. The standardized use of Noise Figure provides a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) used to specify virtually all receiving devices or receivers, and is a vital Figure of Merit (FoM) in the research and development of new devices or cascaded systems. In this webinar, Prof. Rappaport will introduce a new figure of merit for the comparison of wasted power along any cascade. This new figure of merit, which we call the Power Waste Factor, or simply the Waste Factor (W), or Waste Figure in dB, is derived using a remarkably similar approach taken by Harold Friis in 1944 to create the Noise Factor. Here, we show that the Waste Figure is a powerful figure of merit for comparing and contrasting the power efficiency of any circuit or cascade of circuits or systems. Just as Noise Figure characterizes the additive noise of a cascade, the Waste Figure characterizes the wasted power along a cascade compared to the input power, since the output signal power of a cascade, when multiplied by the system Waste Factor, determines the entire power consumed along the entire cascade. In an era where energy efficiency is more important than ever, the Waste Factor and Waste Figure may be used as a standard KPI to ensure power efficient circuit and system designs. And as shown in this webinar, the Waste Figure may be applied to any cascade, including lossy radio channels, thus providing a FoM that is not only applicable for circuit designs, but also has application for multi-user wireless system and network designs. Decoding hidden worlds: Unprecedented sensing and connectivity for climate, robotics and smart environments.​​ This talk will cover a new generation of technologies that can sense, connect, and perceive the physical world in unprecedented ways. These technologies can uncover hidden worlds around us, promising transformative impact on areas spanning climate change monitoring, ocean mapping, healthcare, food security, supply chain, and even extraterrestrial exploration. The talk will cover four core technologies invented by Prof. Adib and his team. The first is an ocean internet-of-things (IoT) that uses battery-free sensors for climate change monitoring, marine life discovery, and seafood production (aquaculture). The second is a new perception technology that enables robots to sense and manipulate hidden objects. The third is a new augmented reality headset with "X-ray vision”, which extends human perception beyond line-of-sight. The fourth is a wireless sensing technology that can “see through walls” and monitor people’s vital signs (including​​ their breathing, heart rate, and emotions), enabling smart environments that sense humans requiring any contact with the human body. The talk will touch on the journey of these technologies from their inception at MIT to international collaborations and startups that are translating them to real-world impact in areas spanning healthcare, climate change, and supply chain. 6G cellular networks will be extremely complex systems that must meet many competing requirements in a large variety of environments and use cases. A key enabling 6G technology will be deep learning,

6G cellular networks will be extremely complex systems that must meet many competing requirements in a large variety of environments and use cases. A key enabling 6G technology will be deep learning, which can unlock previously hidden system-level gains, particularly by effectively learning custom site-specific communication techniques that are optimally adapted for each cell-site. Prof. Jeffrey Andrews will present a short summary of some of his group’s recent discoveries and technologies based on deep learning (DL) that demonstrate a large potential impact in 6G. The first is a novel and practical approach for beam alignment in millimeter wave and THz bands that can achieve a phenomenal speed up, at least 10x and in some cases approaching 1000x, by sensing and exploiting unique aspects of the environment. The second is a new architecture for estimating high dimensional channels by harnessing the expressive power of deep generative networks to develop a custom model of each cell’s channel distribution. The third is a site-specific multicell optimization that rapidly learns near-optimal global settings for each base stations antenna arrays, a problem that is completely intractable using conventional techniques. It is trained and tested on AT&T’s commercial simulation platform and shows large gains over existing 3GPP approaches. While Machine Learning (ML) models are becoming an essential component of many mobile applications, they also pose relevant challenges, as they require the execution of an operational pipeline

While Machine Learning (ML) models are becoming an essential component of many mobile applications, they also pose relevant challenges, as they require the execution of an operational pipeline including training and inference. Due to the substantial computational and energy burden imposed by such operations, distributed ML has emerged as a paradigm that can enable ML at the network edge, by indeed distributing the computational load across different network nodes and, also, a better privacy preservation whenever data are processed locally. In spite of such advantages, also distributed ML may face significant hurdles, namely, (i) slower execution of the ML operational pipeline, due to the limited computing and energy capability of the nodes contributing to that, and (ii) the high bandwidth consumption on the links connecting the participating network nodes, whenever the output of intermediate processing has to be transferred from one node to another. A paradox thus arises due to such hurdles and the fact that the distributed ML paradigm has been introduced to support ML-based services and applications at the edge with low latency towards the end devices and reduced bandwidth consumption to the cloud. In this talk, we discuss such a paradox and how it can be solved by leveraging dynamic structures of ML models which already exists as well as techniques for the compression of ML models and input datasets. In the pursuit of enhancing predictive performance, the imperative for transparency in AI/ML models has become paramount for successful deployment. Simultaneously, stringent privacy requirements underscore the need to safeguard user data and prevent unauthorized access. Thus, deploying AI systems necessitates a harmonious integration of transparency, privacy, and performance. However, achieving these objectives can be intricate, as they occasionally stand in tension with one another. For instance, increasing transparency may require revealing more information about how an AI model makes decisions, which could potentially compromise some sensible data. Simultaneously, prioritizing privacy may hinders the quality of data or even require limiting the amount of data that an AI model can access, which could impact its performance. In essence, while transparency, privacy, and performance are indispensable goals, their alignment demands a delicate equilibrium to ensure effective collaboration in the design of AI-based algorithms for communication networks, steering clear of a potential dark triad. As 5G takes to the airwaves, we now turn our imagination to the next generation of wireless technology. The promise of this technology has created an international race to innovate, with significant investment by government as well as industry. And much innovation is needed as 6G aspires to not only support significantly higher data rates than 5G, but also improved reliability along with excellent coverage indoors and out, including for underserved areas. New architectures including edge computing must be designed to drastically enhance efficient resource allocation while also reducing latency for real-time control. Breakthrough energy-efficiency architectures, algorithms and hardware will be needed so that wireless devices can be powered by tiny batteries, energy-harvesting, or over-the-air power transfer. And machine learning may will play a big role in the underlying technologies for NextG as well as the “killer apps” that will drive its deployment and success. We believe it will liberate human potential, inclusively and sustainably. Traditional metrics such as capacity, throughput, reliability, and latency will continue to be important. But unlike previous Gs, 6G will go beyond. Sustainability, trustworthiness, and digital inclusion will become key value drivers for the 6G era. Nishant Batra will describe many of the key technologies Nokia and its partners are envisioning for future 6G systems.
