Welcome to Hearts and Minds—A QTAPI Community Conversation Series, Session Two: Asians and Pacific Islanders: Our Future Determines Our Past. "Our future determines our past" is a play on words and ideas of how people are taught that the past can determine who we are. Though people can understand the past, will they necessarily learn from it to make decisions that make the future stronger and more just and equitable? When we are ashamed of some aspects of our history, do we not speak of it or acknowledge it? In the present, our relationship to the past—how we appreciate it, amplify it, and even shine light on the darkest aspects, can determine our relationship to that past and what we do with it and how we grow and evolve as a community. How can people, in the diversity of the Asian and Pacific Islander communities, honor and embrace all of these histories? This legacy can help people know their histories about resilience and strength as they stand on the shoulders of ancestors. The future may be undetermined, but we hope this conversation inspires folks to envision what sort of future they would like for their communities to be centered in and how they might participate in achieving that vision. Funded by the CA Humanities, whose mission is “to connect Californians to ideas and one another in order to understand our shared heritage and diverse cultures, inspire civic participation, and shape our future.” That is the shared vision for Hearts and Minds: A QTAPI Community Conversation Series,” and it is to that end that GAPA Theatre’s “Hearts and Minds” program continues its work in ensuring our QTAPI stories continue to be told. About the Speakers Peter Tuiolosega Silva is the executive director of Kumukahi Health + Wellness, located on the island of Hawai'i. Peter has been an HIV advocate in the Pacific Island community for more than two decades, serving as the HIV trainer for the Pacific Islands, coordinator for the Pacific Island Jurisdictions AIDS Action Group, founder of UTOPIA Hawai'i, and prevention director of Life Foundation. Silva was most recently a public servant in the Hawai'i Department of Health’s Harm Reduction Services Branch. He currently lives in Hilo with his partner of 25 years. Amy Sueyoshi is dean of the College of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State University. Sueyoshi holds a Ph.D. in history from the University of California, Los Angeles and a B.A. from Barnard College and has published two books: Queer Compulsions: Race, Nation, and Sexuality in the Affairs of Yone Noguchi and Discriminating Sex: White Leisure and the Making of the American “Oriental.” Sueyoshi also authored “Breathing Fire,” a brief survey of queer APIDA history, for the National Parks Service’s historic LGBT Theme Study, which won the Paul E. Buchanan Award from the Vernacular Architecture Forum. Sueyoshi is also a founding co-curator of the GLBT History Museum, the first queer history museum in the United States, and seeded the intergenerational Dragon Fruit Oral History Project at API Equality Northern California. Helen Zia is the author of Asian American Dreams: The Emergence of an American People, a finalist for the prestigious Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize and referred to by President Bill Clinton in two separate speeches in the Rose Garden. She coauthored, with Wen Ho Lee, My Country Versus Me, which reveals what happened to the Los Alamos scientist who was falsely accused of being a spy for China in the “worst case since the Rosenbergs.” She was executive editor of Ms. Magazine and is a founding board co-chair of the Women's Media Center. The daughter of immigrants from China, Helen has been outspoken on issues ranging from human rights and peace to women's rights and countering hate violence and homophobia. She is a Fulbright Scholar and a graduate of Princeton University’s first coeducational class. She attended medical school but quit after completing two years, then went to work as a construction laborer, an autoworker, and a community organizer, after which she discovered her life’s work as a writer. And it can also be used in plants, for example, to speed up the growth pace and otherwise to provide ways to help harden the species or improve a species contribution to the response to climate change. So many aspects of society have been transformed by technology breakthroughs in the last couple of decades. And I would argue that the environmental arena broadly and climate change in particular had seen very little of that brought to bear despite an urgent need. And I do think suddenly that’s changing. We now have a number of people that are looking at various aspects of the technology world and saying how might this help us achieve a sustainable future. And that is very much a focus of the Better Planet book with a number of authors putting forward both technologies and frames of thinking that might move us towards a climate change answer. One of the most important aspects of this in my mind is the concept of genomics, of thinking about how we do genetic modification as a strategy for improving sustainability. And the chapter in our Better Planet book that lays this out offers examples both in terms of human exposure to public health threats broadly and to climate change in particular and understanding how we might well be able to address individual exposures that differ from the general public with genomic intervention in the future sparing people pain and suffering they might otherwise face. And perhaps even more interesting there are very significant ways that we might see genomic progress in addressing the plant and animal world. I’m thinking in particular of forests which could be a critical sink for carbon dioxide and I do think there are ways that we can make forests grow faster and perhaps serve more successfully as a sink for those greenhouse gases ensuring a better response to the problem and getting us to think about both mitigation, reducing emissions, but also the ability to set up nature as part of the solution absorbing those carbon emissions.

I think this has to be understood as in some regards an ethical issue, a moral issue and one has to see it as a wrong to contaminate the planet and to put at risk the future of humanity on the planet. And I think that change is coming and curiously but perhaps not really surprisingly it is coming from young people much more from the generation that’s currently in positions of leadership. Greta and other young people are out there saying to the leaders and political positions of power not only in the United States but across the world step up. You need to do more. And I think we have seen again and again that transformational change is often driven by generational change. And I think it’s almost certainly going to be true on climate change. Fifty years ago if we’d had this interview I’d probably be smoking or maybe smoking a pipe as a professor. That’s so unacceptable now you don’t even have to tell me that I can’t come in and light up a cigarette. Norms have changed. Values have changed. We know now that that’s completely unacceptable and a threat to public health. And I think we’re starting to get there on climate change. Things that might have in the past seemed normal, acceptable, even if they seemed a little bad, a little bit of harm are increasingly totally unacceptable and we therefore have I think the foundation for the kind of generational change and change in values that can really drive us more quickly towards climate change solutions. And in our Better Planet book there’s a really beautiful essay by one of the students at Yale, one of several student essays in this case by a guy named Paul Rink spelling out how young people in particular are starting to drive some of these court cases where they take on both the government and the big energy industry companies and say it’s up to you to make our future secure and you’re not doing the job you need to do. Winners of the WSIS Prizes, recognizing innovative technological approaches to support sustainable development, were announced on 28 May 2024 at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS)+20 Forum High-Level Event 2024 in Geneva, Switzerland. Overall, projects from 18 countries were presented with WSIS Prizes top honours, showcasing leading efforts to bridge the digital divide, foster digital inclusion, and drive socio-economic progress on a global scale. “This year's WSIS Prizes demonstrate the innovation and energy that exist to find technological solutions to some of the globe's biggest challenges," said ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin. “These are the creative contributions that the world needs in our effort to advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals." The E-Waste+ application is an innovative solution developed under the “Thais say no to E-Waste” project by AIS, with a strong commitment to environmental conservation and acting on climate change. The application aims to address the challenges of e-waste management in Thailand by providing a comprehensive platform that encourages responsible e-waste disposal and recycling.The pain points of traditional drop points for e-waste disposal can indeed hinder effective e-waste management. Two significant pain points are: 1. Lack of Track and Trace: In traditional drop points, individuals disposing of their e-waste often have no way to track and trace the journey of their discarded items. This lack of transparency creates a sense of detachment and uncertainty among users, as they remain unaware of whether their e-waste is being handled responsibly and recycled properly. 2. High Cost of Drop Points: Traditional drop points are often made from recycled paper, which can still be costly to produce and maintain. The expenses associated with creating and managing these drop points may limit their availability and outreach to potential users, hindering efforts to promote responsible e-waste disposal. The E-Waste+ application addresses these pain points through its innovative use of blockchain technology and real-time engagement. By leveraging blockchain, users can now track and trace their e-waste items from the moment of disposal at a drop point to the recycling facility. This level of transparency empowers users and creates a sense of ownership and accountability, as they can witness the positive impact of their actions on the environment. Additionally, application's use of blockchain allows for a more cost-effective solution. Unlike traditional drop points made from recycled paper, the digital nature of the E-Waste+ application reduces the need for physical infrastructure and maintenance costs. This cost efficiency enables a wider distribution of drop points and encourages greater participation from users and businesses. JaWAra Internet Sehat is a project to encourage young digital activists in the region to become community leaders (local champions) who will initiate and drive digital literacy education programs with a local and bottom-up approach, creating changes from the grassroots. This project was undertaken by ICT Watch and WhatsApp, with the support of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT) of the Republic of Indonesia, Relawan TIK Indonesia (Indonesia ICT Volunteers) and Digital Literacy National Movement "SIBERKREASI". In their activities, the local champions provide digital literacy education to many elements of society, especially to people in villages/rural areas, children, people with disabilities, youth, and women (mothers), through local approaches that are easily accepted, such as wayang (traditional puppets) show, local cultural content, movies, games (cards/snakes and ladders), etc. This project also develops the distance learning system through https://akademi.internetsehat.id and Digital Literacy WhatsApp ChatBot at https://s.id/kakinat, so the communities can carry out self-learning for some topics, such as combating hoaxes, digital security, personal data protection, etc. The chatbot has already followed by 21,345 participants. In 2021, this program recruited 60 local youth champions (JaWAra) who successfully ran 108 digital literacy education programs in their respective areas. This program reached 29,731 people in 73 regencies/cities from 26 provinces. In 2022, we recruited another 100 local youth champions who ran 186 digital literacy programs, reaching 237,784 people. In 2023, we focused on tackling hoaxes toward the General Election of 2024. The JaWAra were involved in the education in 8 cities that covered 3,681 participants.
