Green energy can’t come at the cost of biodiversity loss or the desecration of Indigenous cultures. February 2024 was a big month for defending that position in Arizona, where the Center began.

First we filed an injunction, alongside the Tohono O’odham Nation and San Carlos Apache Tribe, to stop construction of wind-power transmission lines that are damaging sacred sites and harming the fragile San Pedro River, as captured in this video.

We also won a major victory with Navajo allies — and help from 7,000 supporters — against multiple proposed hydropower projects in Black Mesa. The projects would have depleted aquifers, destroyed prehistoric sites, and harmed Mexican spotted owl habitat, worsening problems caused by decades of coal extraction. This win also establishes a new nationwide policy giving Tribes veto power over permits targeting their land. The Center has filed a notice of intent to sue the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) for refusing to develop a national gray wolf recovery plan under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). This challenges the Trump administration's finding that ESA protection for the gray wolf is "no longer appropriate" and its decision to forgo an updated recovery plan. This action comes two years after a similar successful lawsuit.

Collette Adkins, a senior attorney, affirmed, "We’re challenging the Trump administration’s unlawful decision to once again abandon wolf recovery, and we’ll win." She stressed that the FWS must follow science and law, demanding a comprehensive national recovery plan. Past delistings resulted in hundreds of wolves being hunted, underscoring the critical need for consistent federal protections.

North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple activated the National Guard ahead of a ruling on the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe's lawsuit against the $3.8 billion Dakota Access pipeline. U.S. District Judge James Boasberg is set to rule on an injunction challenging the Army Corps of Engineers' permits, arguing violations of the National Historic Preservation Act.

Over 1,000 people from more than 100 Native American tribes have gathered near the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation to resist the pipeline's construction, marking the largest tribal unification in decades. An update is provided by Tara Houska, national campaigns director for Honor the Earth.
