These 3 teachers work actively to make Los Gatos High School green. Kim Burlinson Teaches science at Los Gatos High School Amelia DeLaPaz earned a BS in geological and environmental science and an MA in science education from Stanford University. For over a decade, she has worked to increase awareness about Earth and environmental science issues. She has taught Earth science for The Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talented Youth and worked with the US State Department teaching Egyptian students outside of Cairo, Egypt. Amelia has taught both Earth and environmental science at Los Gatos High School for the past 10 years. She created and teaches the AP Environmental Science course at LGHS. Through that course she has given hundreds of students the opportunity to explore their environment through service- learning, long- term data collection from local waterways and regional and international field trips. Predictive algorithms may help us shop, discover new music or literature, but do they belong in the courthouse? Dartmouth professor Dr. Hany Farid reverse engineers the inherent dangers and potential biases of recommendations engines built to mete out justice in today's criminal justice system. The co-founder and CTO of Fourandsix Technologies, an image authentication and forensics company, Hany Farid works to advance the field of digital forensics. Hany said, “For the past decade I have been working on technology and policy that will find a balance between an open and free Internet while reining in online abuses. With approximately a billion Facebook uploads per day and 400 hours of video uploaded to YouTube every minute, this task is technically and logistically complicated but also, I believe, critical to the long-term health of our online communities.” Hany is the Albert Bradley 1915 Third Century Professor and Chair of Computer Science at Dartmouth. Join Morgan McCue, CCL's Legislative Coordinator for a legislative update that explores the key elements behind how the Save Our Future Act is designed and highlights CCL’s interpretation of this landmark carbon pricing policy. Today, June 16, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and Senator Brian Schatz introduced a new carbon pricing bill called “The Save Our Future Act.” In the 116th Congress, Sens. Whitehouse, Schatz Heinrich and Gillibrand introduced a similar bill called the The American Opportunity Carbon Fee Act of 2019 (S.1128; 116th). This legislation would place an ambitious price on carbon to reduce America's emissions, while also addressing long-standing environmental justice concerns, investing in coal communities to support their transition to a clean energy economy, and protecting American households by providing regular rebates and funding for further emissions reductions. She co-founded Mobility for Africa in 2018 in order to apply her experience to making a lasting difference in rural women’s lives. She was driven by her early experiences living in Zambia, where women carried the enormous burden of walking long distances carrying goods, water and children, with no support. She has a masters from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, and an honours degree in History from University of Western Australia. There are over 1,000 native bee species in the state of Arizona. Ranging from the size of an eyelash to larger than a thumb, these beautiful and intriguing creatures are responsible for the majority of pollination that happens in wild landscapes, urban gardens, and agricultural fields. Though the relationship between bees and flowers seems elegant, and is essential to the functioning of any ecosystem, it is fraught with all the intricacies and manipulations of a Shakespeare play. In this talk, Dr. Carril will introduce her audience to Arizona's native solitary bees and explore the relationships of these bees with the flowering plants on which they depend –and which depend on them. BIO: Dr. Olivia Carril has been studying native bees for over 25 years. She received her BS and MSc from Utah State University, and a PhD from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. She is the coauthor of three books: The Bees in Your Backyard, a Field Guide to North America's Bees; The Common Bees of Eastern North America; and the soon to be released Common Bees of Western North America. She is currently conducting several large scale surveys of bees throughout the western United States, and studying several rare plants in New Mexico. In her spare time, she teaches science to middle schoolers, and hangs out with her two adorable daughters and her handsome husband.

Anirudh is a social entrepreneur, building a consortium of sustainability leaders to address our Planet's looming ecological crisis. He previously worked in the aerospace industry with Airbus Defence & Space. His current decade-long mission is to be a social innovator, industrial designer and storyteller; by living at the intersection of art & science, poetry & philosophy.
