Imminent Problem of Care for Creation by Rev. John Rausch

On Laudato Si' & the Imminent Problem of Care for Creation

On Care for Our Common Home

Interview with Father John Rausch of the Glenmary Home Missioners who speaks about Pope Francis' Papal Encyclical Laudato Si: On Care for Our Common Home (2015), and the imminent problem humanity faces with "care of creation." Father John explains its not an economic or ecological problem — its a spiritual one, with great consequences for the world's poor — and more so, for all of us. We are all connected, and only through good relations and a value system that builds community and the global commons can we save the Earth.

Climate change is real, and each one of us has a stake in our common future, and so we need to engage in dialogue, and more so, change our lifestyles. Father John is a Catholic Priest and environmental steward of the US Southern Appalacia Mountain region. He has worked actively to raise awareness and to stop the dangerous practice of mountain top mining that is destroying biodiversity and communities throughout the Southeastern states of the US.

Arctic Sea Ice Reaches Another Record Low (March 2017)

Published on Mar 22, 2017

On March 7, 2017, Arctic sea ice reached its annual wintertime maximum extent, according to scientists at the NASA-supported National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) and NASA. The Arctic sea ice extent set a record low after a warm winter. Combining the Arctic and Antarctic numbers shows that the planet’s global sea ice levels on Feb. 13 were at their lowest point since satellites began to continuously measure sea ice in 1979.

Shell Oil's Stern Warning on Climate Change from 1991

Shell Oil Company made Climate of Concern in 1991 as a warning against the dangers of climate change; then they ignored it.

Oil Giant Shell has spent millions lobbying against action on climate change. Yet a video uncovered by De Correspondent and The Guardian has revealed that the company was acutely aware of the dangers of global warming as early in 1991 when it produced a short documentary warning against the threat of global warming.

NASA's Analysis of 2016 Global Temperature

Published on Jan 18, 2017

Third hottest year in a row.

2016 was the hottest year on record, continuing a decades-long warming trend. Scientists at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) analyzed measurements from 6,300 locations and found that Earth’s average surface temperature has risen about 2.0 degrees Fahrenheit (1.1 degrees Celsius) since the late-19th century, largely a result of human emissions into the atmosphere.

Tracking Ocean Heat With Magnetic Fields

Published on Dec 12, 2016

As Earth warms, much of the extra heat is stored in the planet’s ocean – but monitoring the magnitude of that heat content is a difficult task.

A surprising feature of the tides could help, however. Scientists at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, are developing a new way to use satellite observations of magnetic fields to measure heat stored in the ocean.

The method depends on several geophysical features of the ocean. Seawater is a good electrical conductor, so as the saltwater sloshes around the ocean basins it causes slight fluctuations in Earth’s magnetic field lines. The ocean flow attempts to drag the field lines along. The resulting magnetic fluctuations are relatively small, but have been detected from an increasing number of events including swell, eddies, tsunamis, and tides. The magnetic fluctuations of the tides depend on the electrical conductivity of the water – and the electrical conductivity of the water depends on its temperature.

This new method could be the first to provide global ocean heat measurements, integrated over all depths, using satellite observations.

Is Climate Denial Destroying Our Planet? (Full Program)

The scientific consensus is that human activity is cooking the planet. Does President-elect Trump calling it a hoax embolden others in denial?

Many people are concerned about the climate and deeply anxious that the new administration will double down on fossil fuels and erase recent climate progress. Ten years ago Republicans John McCain and Lindsay Graham supported fighting climate change. But the party has changed it’s tune in recent years.

Climate scientist Michael Mann and Pulitzer-Prize winning cartoonist Tom Toles take a satirical look at how the issue became so divisive. Cristine Russell is a veteran science journalist with deep knowledge about the politicization of science. Renee Lertzman gets to the psychology of it all. Are we all in denial to some extent? Can better communication help us expand common ground and move on to solutions? Join us for a fun and informative look at manufactured doubt and genuine skepticism.
