On Earth Day, during the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in New York, WECAN hosted "Protecting Land, Rights, and Future Generations: Indigenous Women on the Frontlines of Climate Action and Earth Defense." This event brought together Indigenous women leaders globally to share firsthand experiences of colonization and climate disruption, while highlighting powerful solutions.

They showcased strategies upholding Indigenous rights and sovereignty, bringing health and justice to communities. The event also honored women land defenders protecting ecosystems, often at great personal risk. Panelists discussed democracy, reciprocal economies, rights of nature, and Indigenous rights as vital ways forward for the world.

Indigenous women are leading global efforts to uphold Indigenous rights, sovereignty, and Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) in interactions with financial institutions and corporations. These institutions often perpetuate human and Indigenous rights violations, particularly in extractive industries. A recent event highlighted the need for these entities to implement FPIC, Indigenous rights, and due diligence, while investing in climate justice solutions centered on Traditional Ecological Knowledge.

Given the climate crisis, respecting Indigenous knowledge, ways of life, and FPIC—including the right to say “no” to extraction—is paramount, as 80% of Earth's biodiversity remains on Indigenous lands. This discussion took place at a formal side-event of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues 2022, featuring Indigenous women leaders and global advocates like Sônia Guajajara and Casey Camp-Horinek.

This fourth edition details how fossil fuel extraction disproportionately harms women, particularly in Black, Brown, Indigenous, and low-income communities, leading to increased health risks, violence, and human rights violations. It also identifies complicit financial institutions and recommends steps for accountability and a just transition.

The virtual launch featured frontline women leaders, health experts, and advocates. Speakers like Roishetta Sibley Ozane, Rene Ann Goodrich, Sharon Lavigne, and Casey Camp Horinek demanded that financial institutions take action to protect communities, ecosystems, and the climate.

The event featured two panels. The first, "Women Ending the Era of Fossil Fuels," discussed transitioning away from extraction and policy advocacy. The second, "Women-led Climate Solutions Are Central to a Just Transition and Thriving Future," showcased successful community-led climate solutions.

Water Protectors at the main resistance camp in North Dakota vowed continued resistance to the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) as the camp was largely vacated following a Wednesday eviction order. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and North Dakota governor imposed a deadline, leading to around 10 arrests. Before the eviction, prayer ceremonies were held, and part of the camp was set on fire.

Protectors assert the camp sits on unceded Sioux territory under the 1851 Treaty of Fort Laramie. While most left, a couple dozen people remain. This encampment, once hosting over 10,000, was the largest gathering of Native Americans in decades. Construction on the final pipeline section resumed after the Trump administration granted an easement to drill beneath the Missouri River.

Discussions focused on critical topics such as forest protection, reforestation, gender-responsive climate policies, fossil fuel resistance, food sovereignty, Indigenous and human rights, Rights of Nature, and strategic campaigns for COP30 and future climate action.

Prominent speakers included Thilmeeza Hussain (UN), Eriel Tchekwie Deranger (2024 Climate Breakthrough Award Winner), Bridget Burns (WEDO), Tzeporah Berman (Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty), Colette Pichon-Battle (Taproot Earth), Jozileia Kaingang (ANMIGA), Taily Terena (2025 Global Citizen Prize Winner), and Casey Camp-Horinek (Ponca Nation Environmental Ambassador). The event was moderated by Osprey Orielle Lake, Founder and Executive Director of Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN).
