The modern economy is an example of an unhealthy hierarchy, says John Fullerton, founder and president of Capital Institute. Unlike all other living systems, its design is not sustainable. The laws of nature show how hierarchies can be healthy: "The lion is at the top of the food chain, but the lion sits around sleeping most the day rather than eating and killing all day," says Fullerton. All nature is hierarchical but sustainable; look at the similar branching patterns of tree roots, river systems, lightning bolts, and our own cardiovascular system. How can we modify capitalism to become self-sustaining? Financial incentives and disincentives could create a regenerative economy that reduces inequality. If we do not design a better kind of capitalism, "we will increase inequality to the point that we have civil strife and civil wars." 

John Fullerton is the founder and president of Capital Institute, a non-partisan organization working to create a more just and sustainable way of living on earth through the implementation of a Regenerative Economy. After spending years immersed in the sustainability challenge of our age following his Wall Street career, John is now a globally-recognized thought leader in the New Economy space. With a plan developed for the state of Georgia as the example, John makes a powerful case for a new and exciting method to fighting climate change that incorporates not only solutions that reduce carbon emissions but also those that address social issues such as unemployment and hunger on a local level. Advocating for the environment is part of John A. Lanier’s DNA. As the executive director of the Ray C. Anderson Foundation, he continues the legacy of his grandfather, the late corporate environmental pioneer Ray C. Anderson through Foundation programs that seek to create a brighter, more sustainable world. On the 15th of March 2019, 1.5 million people around the world participated in School Strike for Climate; most of whom walked out of school to do so. This was about young people all over the world taking a stand, rising up, and saying enough is enough. In this thoughtful and engaging talk, activist Lucy Gray makes a compelling argument for putting climate justice at the centre of humanity’s path forward. Lucy is a 12-year-old climate activist and songwriter. She found her passion in climate action in 2017 and started a climate action group in her school, encouraging young people to come along and learn about climate change. When the international school strikes reached New Zealand, Lucy saw that were strikes registered all across New Zealand, but none in Christchurch, so she decided to lead the Christchurch strike; she also founded the Christchurch School Strike for Climate (SS4C) group and is now also a co-convenor of the national School Strike for Climate NZ team, a group created by students, for students, to plan and run strikes, and to urge the government to act urgently on climate change. Lucy has another passion—music. She wrote a song about changing the way we act, and standing up for what is right, called ‘Rise Up’, which she has performed at the strike and other future focused events like National Young Leaders Day and Festival for the Future.
