While on a trip to the Maldives in 2009, he came up with a solution to the problem of an abundance of sun, but not so much available land. If you have maxed out the available space for photovoltaics on land, why not put photovoltaics on the sea? By developing a marine floating solar system which can provide any required solar capacity to almost any island, an island could switch off their diesel gensets completely during daytime. Martin founded Swimsol in 2012 and worked in cooperation with the Technical University of Vienna to develop SolarSeaTM - the world's first commercial modular marine-grade floating solar system. Today Swimsol has 55 employees and has successfully completed projects in the Maldives, Indonesia, and Malaysia, and are currently expanding into new markets. Don Alejandro Cirilo Pérez, Wakatel Utiw (Wandering Wolf), is Quiche Maya from the highlands of Guatemala. Wandering Wolf serves as: leader of the National Mayan Council of Elders of Guatemala; Day Keeper of the Mayan Calendar; 13th generation Quiche Mayan Spiritual Leader; a founder and Grand Elder of the Continental Council of Elders & Spiritual Guides of the Americas; Extraordinary Ambassador in the Guatemalan government representing the indigenous pueblos; and an international lecturer on Mayan culture.His mathematical provenance extends to the traditional and elegant mathematics of the Mayan Long Count Calendar, which culminates in the Mayan year “Zero,” or approximately 2012 in the Gregorian calendar. Grandfather Cirilo holds the great honor of keeping sacred the teachings, visions, ceremonies and prophecies of the Maya people.

In his talk, Dr. Walker explains how fundamental physical sciences such as chemistry and physics claim to study the basic properties of the universe, but in reality, are almost exclusively tied to our living environment - "normal" temperature, pressure, gravity. As civilization prepares to live in space, this is no longer acceptable. This presentation expands how we see scientific research, to open up completely new areas of study and creativity. Dr. Martin Walker is a professor and chair of the Department of Chemisty at SUNY Potsdam.
