Currently, cities are grappling with the effects of our current take-make-waste, linear economy. They consume over 75% of natural resources, produce over 50% of global waste, and emit 60-80% of global greenhouse gases. At the same time, cities continue to grow; by 2050, two-thirds of us will live in cities. They are engines of economic growth and centres of culture, innovation, and learning. As city governments look to recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and address major challenges like the climate crisis, the circular economy offers a systems solutions framework that can unlock economic, environmental, and society-wide benefits. City governments can enable, lead, and involve other key stakeholders from across the public and private sectors, using the wide range of policy levers and measures at their disposal. In this episode, we will hear from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s three Strategic Partner Cities— London, New York City, and São Paulo—about advancing the circular economy and mobilising systems solutions.

Chad Frischmann defines Drawdown as a point in time when we can begin to reduce concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, effecting global cooling, stopping global warming, and beginning the long process of reversing the climate crisis. Reframing our understanding of climate change as a symptom of a deeper problem can help direct our attention more sharply to the root causes, and therefore the actual solutions. Chad and his team of researchers have measured and described real existing technologies and practices that, when taken together, can achieve the goal of Drawdown. With food waste and loss responsible for roughly eight percent of global emissions, reducing both as part of a system of solutions can play a surprisingly significant role in helping us reach Drawdown – the pivotal point that will set the planet towards a better future. Co-author of Drawdown, vice president of Project Drawdown, works to reverse global warming and help build a new, regenerative future. Starting in 2011, when Republicans gained control of the House of Representatives, until this March, Congress enacted hardly any major legislation outside of the tax law President Trump signed in 2017. In the same period, the Supreme Court dismantled much of America's campaign finance law, severely weakened the Voting Rights Act, permitted states to opt-out of the Affordable Care Act's Medicaid expansion, weakened laws protecting against age discrimination and sexual and racial harassment, and held that every state must permit same-sex couples to marry. This powerful, unelected body, now controlled by six Republican presidential appointees, sat at the center of American political life, a trend that will likely continue, with profound impacts on the country's political system and civic life. Ian Millhiser, Vox's Supreme Court correspondent, tells the story of what is likely to come from the Supreme Court in the coming years, particularly around significant divisive issues such as abortion and affirmative action. Equally important, Millhiser also explores the arcane decisions that the Court can use to fundamentally reshape America, transforming it into something he believes is far less democratic by attacking voting rights, dismantling the federal administrative state, ignoring the separation of church and state, and putting corporations above the law.
