According to a new report, just 100 companies have been the source of more than 70% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions since 1988. Their actions are contributing to social inequality and the wider ecological crisis. But young people today can play a vital role in shaping the policies that can limit the climate crisis while building a more fair society. Tabitha Spence is a geographer, teacher and organiser based in Lahore. Her work centres around the need for a transition of the global economy to one that sustainably meets 21st century needs for all people. She works with the Asia Europe People's Movement, and is involved with Haqooq e Khalq Movement, Progressive International and Democratic Socialists of America. In early February, a reporter and camera crew from VICE News covered CCL’s Conservative Climate Lobby Day where 100 conservatives who worry that the Republican party is losing ground on the issue of #climatechange met and then lobbied 74 republican members of Congress. One of the participants, 22-year-old Jacob Abel, told VICE News that the party might lose young people like himself if it doesn’t lead more on climate policy. “I think that's why they're starting to move on it more now because they see the writing on the wall. This is an important issue for people who are my age. They want to see climate change addressed. They want conservative Republican solutions for it. Arissa Jemaima and Davina Devarajan were just 23 and 25 years old when they founded Women For Refugees (WFR), a non-governmental organisation aimed to empower and uplift refugee women. Refugee women are disenfranchised not only by the lack of proper policies and systems in place but also by social stigmas that contribute to gender disparity. They lack avenues to voice their concerns, resources to learn new skills, and opportunities to create a better life for themselves. Having realised this, Arissa and Davina initiated WFR as a grassroots platform to empower refugee women by equipping them with the skills into becoming formidable women leaders in their communities. Young people are often put on the back burner of social change. However, both Arissa and Davina are committed to rising above such hurdles. Today, they are pursuing a mission to champion the idea of community impact through grassroots initiative. They believe that change often comes from the courage to begin at zero. People working at the grassroots levels like Arissa and Davina are the unsung heroes but little was known about their stories. Ben Dunbar is a third-generation teacher with backgrounds in sustainable development and teacher training. He spends his free time modeling whimsy and silliness to his two young daughters while scrambling to understand fatherhood.
