Unfortunately, they are a finite resource and pose significant risks to our environment; therefore, they must be replaced. For the transition to a future energy economy making use of hydrogen as a fuel produced by nuclear power and renewables, Professor Eric McFarland predicts that methane will be the most important molecule for prosperity in the next century. McFarland’s research has shown that the methane in abundant natural gas can be cost-effectively converted by pyrolysis in high-temperature molten metals and salts to solid carbon and hydrogen gas. The cheapest heat and electricity in the U.S. comes from burning natural gas; however, increasingly major markets (e.g. California and Germany) have imposed carbon taxes which make this CO2-free process competitive today. Sara Snyder Hopkins is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Cherokee Language Program at Western Carolina University. An ethnomusicologist and linguistic anthropologist by training, she previously spent six years teaching elementary music for New Kituwah Academy, the Cherokee language immersion school in Cherokee, NC. Dr. Joseph W. Dorsey is an Associate Professor in the Patel College of Global Sustainability (PCGS) at the University of South Florida, Tampa, PCGS Academic Capstone Director, PCGS Concentration Director in Food Sustainability and Security, and the PCGS Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. His research interests include brownfield redevelopment; urban agriculture in developed and developing nations; sustainable food resource management strategies; and community economic empowerment initiatives. Dr. Dorsey has held faculty positions at Michigan State University, Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and the University of South Florida – St. Petersburg. Prior to his doctoral career, Joseph was a Peace Corps Volunteer (maternity and child nutritionist) in Africa, a public health nutritionist in the Caribbean, and a clinical nutritionist in the United States. In his talk "Urban Agriculture and Food Security in the Age of Climate Change," he outlines ways we can live more sustainably in our urban communities. Dr. Joseph W. Wastewater is stinky, dirty and a serious problem for human health and the environment. However, there is potential for transforming this residue into a resource. Dr. Vinka Oyanedel-Craver is a Professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Rhode Island. Her current research interests in the area of emerging contaminants of drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater treatment, as well as the development of novel water technologies. Her current research focus is on environmental nanotechnology, specifically on the behavior and application of nanomaterials in different ecological compartments and their use as antimicrobial compounds in point of use water/wastewater treatment in rural developing communities.
