Italy, sandwiched between the rapidly warming Adriatic and Mediterranean seas, is particularly vulnerable to climate change. Last year, severe drought drained many of Italy’s rivers, and dried up 45% of its farmland. This year, it’s #flooding. Parts of northern Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region received half their average annual rainfall in 36 hours. Rivers burst their banks, submerging thousands of acres of farmland. #PeterWadhams, Professor Emeritus, Cambridge University, lives in Turin and is witnessing the effects of these crises firsthand. This summer, it may be too dry or too wet, but heat will be the major concern as the #Climate Crisis continues to unfold. He explains the policy based, complimentary mobility solutions and practical action of the H2020 CIVITAS destinations project and how diverse people engaged in those actions and learned about enhancing sustainability in mobility. This programme has shown to improve living quality for permanent residents, increase the image of the city and improve the experience of visitors. Rapid melting has led to #avalanches and flash floods, which exacerbated the heavy monsoon rains in Pakistan in 2022. At the same time, both poles are losing ice mass at an unanticipated rate. Professors Detlef Stammer, Director of the Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability at the University of Hamburg and Peter Wadhams, Emeritus Professor of Ocean Physics at Cambridge University share their findings about our disappearing glaciers, and some of the measures that are being taken to try to save them. While this is not an immediate threat, the latest research shows that #Greenland’sGlaciers are shrinking at seven times the rate of just a few years ago, an average of 30 million tonnes an hour. Fresh water entering the ocean from this melting has major implications for the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation , or #AMOC, which is critical to maintain global weather patterns. Liberal democracy is coming apart, under threat from the rise of populism and increasingly unable to deliver the solutions to the multiple challenges facing society. We urgently need bold and radical ideas - not just for the policies we need to tackle the many crises we face - but for the processes necessary to unlock that change. The climate crisis requires radical interventions in the economy, especially in challenging expectations of exponential growth and adds another layer of complexity to challenges facing democracy. Caroline Lucas MP is joined by Professor David Runciman to explore the range of approaches needed to confront this multifaceted concern, and whether deliberative processes can offer a practical way forward to engage citizens more directly in political decision-making and strengthen representative democracy.
