This talk was recorded live at TEDxEuropeanSustainabilityAcademy Crete, online event, 17.10.2020 Theme: Making sense of climate change on Crete;Taking Action |FOOD Kostas enjoys inspiring people and businesses to perform their optimum 'sustainability potential'. His actions focus on helping people to understand sustainable development and develop action in agriculture, food manufacturing and tourism. Small farmers are his heroes. In this talk Kostas shares very important information about the role of soil in combatting the GHGs that are causing global warming. He gives practical advice about how current agricultural practices must change. Kostas gives a snapshot view of a multi-stakeholder collaborative project on the island of Crete to boost sustainable food production practices. This project found that a majority of travellers prefer to eat sustainable, locally produced, certified food even if it costs them more. www.localfoodexperts.com Since 2013, Kostas has been a founding member and COO of 'Local Food Experts'. LFE is a Social Co-operative Enterprise situated in Heraklion, Crete, Greece. It mainly operates in the fields of: • Primary sector organizing • Foodstuffs companies’ organizing and development • Sustainable Tourism activities’ organizing and development During 2016-2019 he was the Chief Project Manager for the project “Crete: First steps towards a Sustainable Food Destination” Between 2004 – 2013: Gastronomic tourism networks on Crete, Kostas created networks among farmers which highlight the importance of Cretan diet. These networks were open to visits by guests and visitors to the island. Kostas studied Agricultural Development & Plant Production in the Agricultural University of Athens (1983-1990). He continued with a MSc degree in Ecological Agriculture in Wageningen Agricultural University in the Netherlands (1992-1993). 2004 he travelled to USA to be trained in Biointensive Farming by John Jeavons. While Machine Learning (ML) models are becoming an essential component of many mobile applications, they also pose relevant challenges, as they require the execution of an operational pipeline

While Machine Learning (ML) models are becoming an essential component of many mobile applications, they also pose relevant challenges, as they require the execution of an operational pipeline including training and inference. Due to the substantial computational and energy burden imposed by such operations, distributed ML has emerged as a paradigm that can enable ML at the network edge, by indeed distributing the computational load across different network nodes and, also, a better privacy preservation whenever data are processed locally. In spite of such advantages, also distributed ML may face significant hurdles, namely, (i) slower execution of the ML operational pipeline, due to the limited computing and energy capability of the nodes contributing to that, and (ii) the high bandwidth consumption on the links connecting the participating network nodes, whenever the output of intermediate processing has to be transferred from one node to another. A paradox thus arises due to such hurdles and the fact that the distributed ML paradigm has been introduced to support ML-based services and applications at the edge with low latency towards the end devices and reduced bandwidth consumption to the cloud. In this talk, we discuss such a paradox and how it can be solved by leveraging dynamic structures of ML models which already exists as well as techniques for the compression of ML models and input datasets. Transparency, privacy and performance: The AI dark triad of next generation Internet Next generation communication networks will rely heavily on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). In the pursuit of enhancing predictive performance, the imperative for transparency in AI/ML models has become paramount for successful deployment. Simultaneously, stringent privacy requirements underscore the need to safeguard user data and prevent unauthorized access. Thus, deploying AI systems necessitates a harmonious integration of transparency, privacy, and performance. However, achieving these objectives can be intricate, as they occasionally stand in tension with one another. For instance, increasing transparency may require revealing more information about how an AI model makes decisions, which could potentially compromise some sensible data. Simultaneously, prioritizing privacy may hinders the quality of data or even require limiting the amount of data that an AI model can access, which could impact its performance. In essence, while transparency, privacy, and performance are indispensable goals, their alignment demands a delicate equilibrium to ensure effective collaboration in the design of AI-based algorithms for communication networks, steering clear of a potential dark triad. The percentage of people defecating in the open air declined worldwide from 1990 to 2015, with the most dramatic reductions in some of the least developed countries. Yet nearly 950 million people still practice this public health hazard—a challenge augmented by population growth.
