John discusses "externalities" and the unsustainable practice of externalizing costs and risks, both social and environmental. The most dramatic and recent example of this practice is the BP oil spill.

A Fascist, observes Madeleine Albright, “is someone who claims to speak for a whole nation or group, is utterly unconcerned with the rights of others, and is willing to use violence and whatever other means are necessary to achieve the goals he or she might have.” Fascism, as she shows, not only endured through the twentieth century but now presents a more virulent threat to peace and justice than at any time since the end of World War II. The momentum toward democracy that swept the world when the Berlin Wall fell has gone into reverse. In many countries, economic, technological, and cultural factors are weakening the political center and empowering the extremes of right and left. Contemporary leaders such as Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un are employing many of the tactics used by Fascists in the 1920s and 30s. Employees in low-skill, low-paid and insecure occupations constitute 45% of Britain’s labour market, and it is these workers that are turning their backs on the left in droves. In the 2019 election, Labour lost many seats in former strongholds in the post-industrial north and Midlands, and by contrast, stacked upvotes in London and other major cities. The collapse of the red wall signals a serious fracture in the left’s relationship with the working class. Can a transformation of work itself help the left to re-establish a connection with the communities that founded it? Starting from the assumption that all work should be fulfilling, respected and well-rewarded, Jon Cruddas and Molly Kinder will explore ways to repair our civic life by paying closer attention to the interests and concerns of the working class. Practical interventions such as national colleges for skilled work and worker councils could help restore value to work and rebalance employer-employee relationships. After studying engineering at Stanford University, where he organized for fossil fuel divestment and environmental justice on campus, Charlie Jiang moved to Washington, DC and became a founding member of the DC ReInvest Coalition. As part of the global movement to #DefundPipelines, this partnership of more than a dozen social justice and climate organizations across DC is pressuring the DC government to divest from banks with unjust ties to fossil fuel pipelines, private prisons, and predatory lending practices. Instead, the Coalition aims to reinvest District funds in community-led solutions for DC’s most under-resourced residents — not fossil fuel and Wall Street profits. Jiang provides strategic and narrative direction for the coalition through action planning, media support, partnership building, and direct advocacy. He has helped organize marches and rallies in DC to support the #NoDAPL movement, which has evolved into the #DefundPipelines movement, and is fighting against the byproducts of fossil fuel extraction, including pollution of our air and water, and damage to local communities.

While we’ve been sheltering in place, construction crews on the borderlands have been blasting away mountains, mowing down ancient cactuses, tearing through sacred sites, draining springs and erecting walls that end wildlife migrations and hurt communities. More than 650 miles of barriers already exist along the border. These walls, fences and barriers cut through sensitive ecosystems, disrupt animal migration patterns, cause catastrophic flooding, and divide communities and tribal nations. This is an unfolding tragedy for the region’s diverse wildlife and people, as well as its rugged and spectacular landscapes. We're fighting in the courts, in Congress and in our communities to stop the Trump administration’s cynical attack on our beautiful borderlands.
