But what if it was possible to reverse that and to create food that was nature and climate positive? The Ellen MacArthur Foundation's newest publication argues that not only is this possible through better design, but also represents a significant opportunity for food manufacturers and retailers to make food that’s better for customers, better for farmers, and better for business. There are about 500 million smallholder farmers around the world. They produce much of the world’s food using only a small fraction of agricultural land and resources. Ironically, this is the group that suffers disproportionately from hunger, poverty and impacts of climate change. Improving the way small farms are designed and managed so that they’re more productive and profitable is an important mechanism for dealing with these issues in a systemic way. Emma Naluyima, a farmer in Uganda, has demonstrated that it is possible to produce abundant and diverse food on a one-acre farm while reducing inputs and increasing profits. She does this through the circular management of resources, a focus on healthy soils, and the application of appropriate technology. Today, supermarkets are a key interface between shoppers and the food they eat. In fact, just nine retailers’ control over 95% of the UK’s grocery market. Supermarkets provide consumers with a cornucopia of choice, where foods sourced from all around the world are available every day for low prices. Unfortunately, sourcing from a global hinterland has resulted in chronic consumer disconnection, mass overconsumption as well as waste of our precious planetary resources. Dr Emma Campbell is a Research Fellow and Design Tutor in Architecture, based within the School of Natural and Built Environment at Queen’s University Belfast. Her research focuses on future relationships between people, food, and place through the lens of sustainability. As a design-researcher, she is really interested in how design and systems-thinking might help to solve some of the wicked problems inherent in food systems today. Currently, Emma works within the Innovate UK funded Ideal Home project in partnership with Moy Park, the UK’s largest poultry integrator. The project applies a research-by-design methodology to evaluate, model and redesign poultry house infrastructures with an aim to increase productivity, improve animal welfare and help the poultry sector meet net zero emissions by 2040. During her Ph.D., Emma presented her work at conferences and workshops locally and internationally, in places such as Doha, Vancouver, Nottingham, Nicosia and Belfast. How do we to step into climate conversations -- by building connections. Environment & Sustainability Expert, Stubborn Optimist Emma has driven and developed Environmental and/or Sustainability programs for the major automotive supplier, Magna International, the retail mogul, Target and the iconic furnishings brand Knoll Inc. Wearing many hats, these roles have focused on compliance, risk management, sustainable design and supply chain transparency. In the past Emma has enjoyed teaching and inspiring local children and schools to rebuild the urban forest and is currently volunteering her expertise to support the circular economy and sustainable procurement initiatives in Canada. She has appeared as an expert speaker at the World Environmental Education Congress sharing her master’s research in environmental connection and stewardship. She has earned her undergraduate degree in Environmental Science from the University of Guelph and a Master of Art’s degree in Environmental Communications from Royal Roads University. Emma is an avid nature photographer and has recently unearthed a passion for portraiture. She loves spending time with her camera and interesting people!
