Rapid decarbonisation of western lifestyles is essential if we are to avoid catastrophic climate change. In order to achieve this we need to mobilise communities around the issue and create compelling future visions for new lifestyles that enhance planetary health. This talk uses ideas developed from the EU funded project CityZEN to develop a methodology to engage citizens in envisioning a shared view of carbon-free future. From this future vision, through a visualisation of the carbon produced by each person, a series of design moves can be developed that create a dramatic change in consumption, through changes in urban space, mobility and energy use. The new neighbourhood future is bio-diverse, carbon friendly, economically prosperous and socially connected. Greg Keeffe is an academic and urban designer with over 30 years experience in sustainability, energy use and its impact on the design of built form and urban space. He is Professor of Sustainable Architecture and Head of the School of Natural and Built Environment at Queens University Belfast. Greg has extensive experience of working closely with architects and planners to develop exciting ways of re-invigorating the city through the application of innovative sustainable technologies, informing his work on the sustainable city as synergistic super-organism. In this way, he has sought to develop a series of theoretical hypotheses about our future existence on the planet, through a series of technological and spatial interventions. Most of his work comes out of a free-thinking open-ended discussion about how things should be. In 2014, Gus won a silver medal for Team USA at the inaugural slopestyle of the Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. At the 2018 Olympics, Gus made history by becoming the first openly gay man to compete for the U.S. in a Winter Olympics. In 2015, Gus came out on the cover of ESPN Magazine, becoming the first openly gay professional athlete in any action sport. Greg is the only male to win gold medals on both 3 meter springboard and 10 meter platform in consecutive Olympic Games (1984, 1988). As the undisputed GOAT of mindset, Greg shares his knowledge and wisdom through his meditation and mindfulness course, as well as through his books: “How to Make the Podium” and “For the Life of Your Dog.” Today, as a coach, speaker, author, actor, activist and humanitarian he continues his tradition of excellence. Stabilizing our climate is going to take some hard truths – and hard numbers. “If you look at 1.5 degrees, it's about 13 years,” says Stanford’s Arun Majumdar. “If you look at 2 degrees, it’s 20 years. And after that, it’s zero.” Meaning: zero time left to solve our planet’s climate problem. But there are ways to turn that zero into a plus – if we act fast enough. “We need to start thinking about carbon removal now,” says Kate Gordon of the Columbia Center on Global Energy Policy. “We can't wait for the second half of the century to start doing the research and development, and getting this to scale and figuring out the technology and stopping deforestation - because these things have got to be part of the current solution.” One way to fight back? With the power of zero: a zero emissions electric grid, zero emission transportation, zero emission buildings and zero waste manufacturing. Getting to zero in those four areas could be the climate solution – if we can all get on the same page. Later in the show: Fighting climate change isn’t cheap. Where’s the money coming from – and where is it going? Greg Dalton was joined by donors big and small for a Climate One discussion on harnessing the power of the purse in the fight against climate change. Major philanthropic organizations like Hewlett, Packard and Bloomberg are at the forefront when it comes to addressing climate change. But are their dollars going to the right places? Tate Williams of Inside Philanthropy thinks they could be doing better. “I find that even today philanthropy doesn't fund the grassroots enough; they don't fund movement building enough,” says Williams. “And then in particular, I find that they don't fund communities of color and low-income communities that have the most to lose when it comes to climate change.” In many ways, small to mid-sized foundations can be more effective on a grass-roots level. golefttv — March 26, 2009 — Its been 20 years since the Exxon Valdez oil tanker spilled into the Prince William Sound, and dumped almost 11 million gallons of oil into the water. But even after two decades of trials and environmental cleanup, conditions are still dismal for the residents who have been trying to get justice. And to make things even worse, we still don't have a full understanding of what really happened when the tanker hit the reef. And that's where our good friend Greg Palast comes in. Greg has been covering this story since the start, and it was the lack of real investigations and inquiries into this disaster that kickstarted his career in journalism. Ring of Fire's Mike Papantonio talks with Palast about the true history of the Exxon Valdez.
