Dr. Peter Victor, Professor and past-Dean of Environmental Studies at York University, argues that economic growth, the primary global policy objective, is unsustainable. Its long-term viability is increasingly questioned due to environmental impacts, resource scarcity, and its failure to significantly improve happiness, eliminate poverty, or create full employment.

A simulation model of the Canadian economy demonstrates that full employment, poverty eradication, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and fiscal balance are achievable without economic growth. Victor advocates shifting focus from growth to specific objectives directly related to human and planetary well-being.

Dr. Joseph W. Dorsey is an Associate Professor and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the University of South Florida's Patel College of Global Sustainability (PCGS). He also directs the PCGS Academic Capstone and the Food Sustainability and Security concentration.

His research focuses on urban agriculture, brownfield redevelopment, sustainable food management, and community economic empowerment. Dr. Dorsey previously held faculty positions at Michigan State, Miami University, and USF-St. Petersburg. Before his doctoral career, he served as a Peace Corps Volunteer and a public health and clinical nutritionist.

Dr. Dan Wildcat, Director of the Haskell Environmental Research Studies (HERS) Center and Dean of the College of Natural and Social Sciences at Haskell Indian Nations University, delivered this report.
