Transforming our energy infrastructure to support greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction goals will require the deployment of technologies such as electric vehicles and energy storage. Improper integration of these technologies into the electric grid and a lack of careful planning of their scale, however, can significantly reduce their real-world effectiveness in supporting GHG emissions reduction goals. Research by Brian Tarroja and his colleagues at UC Irvine presented here focus on identifying grid integration needs and life cycle planning considerations for electric vehicles and energy storage deployment to better ensure that their potential GHG benefits are fully realized in future electricity systems. Indonesia is the world's second largest contributor to food waste, which contradicts the fact that many Indonesians are still living under poverty and lack access to more affordable protein source. Also, the cheap and unsustainable source of protein that are used for animal feed poses a serious threat to the marine ecosystem. In this talk, Rendria Labde explores the possibility of solving two problems with one natural intervention. Rendria Labde co-founded agritech company Magalarva in 2017 after a trip to Bantar Gebang -- one of the world's largest landfills -- inspired him to try to find a away to reduce waste. His solution? The Black Soldier Fly (BSF). For many flies are just disgusting and insignificant insect that live among trash, but not to Rendria. He saw an opportunity with the BSF and their capabilities to effectively consume these waste. At his startup, Magalarva, he feeds the organic waste to the BSF larva, which breaks it down. Once fed, they are able to harvest them to convert into a wide range of products such as fertiliser, fishmeal or dried powder as an alternative source of protein for pets. Rendria holds a degree in mechanical engineering from Universitas Indonesia. A certified permaculturist, he is also the co-founder of Kebun Kumara, an urban farm in Jakarta. He was most recently included in the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia list in 2021 for his effort with Magalarva. Bridging the digital skills divide

One of the main barriers to Internet use and hence closing the digital divide is the lack of knowledge and skills of people to effectively use digital technologies, and the benefits they can bring.

The session will look at those who are still not using digital technologies and will explore the skills needs that will help bridge the digital divide. It will explore issues such as the Internet usage gap and specific groups that need particular attention, including the elderly, persons with disabilities, farmers, or women in rural and remote communities. It will also highlight the intergenerational skills gap and present examples of successful digital skills initiatives that contribute to closing the usage gap. The session will identify concrete actions, solutions and tools that can help achieve the SDGs through inclusive digital capacity and skills development.

Etuaptmumk - Two-Eyed Seeing is explained by saying it refers to learning to see from one eye with the strengths of Indigenous knowledges and ways of knowing, and from the other eye with the strengths of Western knowledges and ways of knowing ... and learning to use both these eyes together, for the benefit of all. Spoken word artist, current Halifax Slam Master and recently appointed Poet Laureate for the Halifax Regional Municipality, Rebecca Thomas also holds the position of Coordinator of Aboriginal Student Services at the Nova Scotia Community College. Coming from an indigenous background whose family has been greatly impacted by residential schools, Ms. Thomas has come to recognize the lack of prominence given to First Nations perspectives within the history of Halifax. As a Mi’kmaw woman, she embraces the opportunity to bring her cultural voice to the broader public discussion through the Poet Laureate position, and believes that the arts and poetry can help people heal in ways beyond traditional therapies. “Poetry can give a voice to the voiceless. Poetry can make a powerless person feel powerful. This is why I speak,” said Ms. Thomas.
