Electric vehicles might seem relatively new. Or slow. Or just inferior to diesel. Eva Hakansson knew that that was what people thought, so she set out on a mission to convince them otherwise. Using her own personally designed, personally crafted electric motorcycle, she’s broken world records countless times over, shocking the world that electric vehicles can be both fast and sexy. Mechanical engineer, lecturer and world-record holder, Eva has shown the world just what electric vehicles can accomplish. Her father being a champion motorcycle rider/builder in the 60s, Eva was raised in a household destined for the racetrack. Starting with the first registered e-bike in Sweden, the ‘Electrocat’, Eva soon developed the ‘KillaJoule’ electric motorcycle in her garage and consequently broke records in land speed racing. Killajoule eventually went on to become the fastest female-driven electric motorcycle, clocking in at 434 km/hr. But determined to go even further, Eva’s latest project, the electric motorcycle ‘Green Envy’, seeks to become the fastest motorcycle in the world, with aims of reaching 650km/h. Outside of her racing career, however, Eva is also a distinguished academic, with Bachelor degrees in Business Administration and Environmental Sciences, a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Denver. During her undergraduate years, she studied Cognitive Science and Anthropology, graduating Magna Cum Laude as an Honors Scholar. As a BOLD Scholar, Kat conducted independent research on Cross Cultural Engagement and Intersectional Activism Among UConn Affiliates and founded UConn Collaborative Organizing (UCCO) for grassroots organizing that prioritized intersectionality and solidarity in activism for social and environmental justice. In this TEDx talk, she discusses environmental racism and climate disasters from a local to global scale, and the power of collaborative organizing with LOVE. In this informative talk, Susan Lazear shares her commitment to becoming more sustainable in our clothing choices and habits and invites the listeners to join her. She shares fashion industry statistics about topics of concern such as waste, toxics, pollution and related, and suggests multiple ways in which consumers can each in their own way help move towards a more sustainable world. As she says, it is not only a big industry problem; it is our problem, and we each in our own way can aid in change. Susan Lazear earned her Bachelor’s degree in Consumer and Family Studies at the University of Guelph, in Ontario Canada. She received her Masters degree in Clothing and Textiles from San Diego State University. She has taught at the college level for most of her working career, but has also worked in different aspects in the Fashion industry in the San Francisco area. Susan owns a computer software business, Cochenille Design Studio, that develops software for textile artists, with Mac and Window programs for garment pattern design, and a grid-based design program for various textile media such as knitting, beading, and so on. He talks about his love for outdoor hockey and how climate change affects the sport. Talking about his history with outdoor hockey, and the work he has done to get an outdoor refrigerated rink built in Kamloops, British Columbia, he sheds light on dream project - Shinny Forever. James has been working for the Sustainability Office at TRU for the last 5 years. Prior to this he did a Masters degree in Environmental Education and Communication from Royal Roads University where he wrote his thesis, Pond hockey dads and climate change: How Canadian fathers feel about the threat of losing the game they love. He is very concerned about the health of key environmental aspects of the planet and recognizes the need for deep and widespread improvements in these areas. However, he’s also deeply touched by the constant examples of inspiring people and technologies that are addressing these issues and trying to make a positive difference. He witnesses examples of this on a regular basis right here at TRU and believes that institutions of learning can and should position themselves on the front lines of tackling environmental problems.
