Mohammad Lari hopes to share the motivation he’s drawn from his first-hand experiences in youth-driven initiatives. Mohammed illustrates the importance of being strong-minded and determined to pursue one’s passions and goals, by learning from one’s failures and taking action locally but thinking globally. In his talk, he explores how the butterfly effect is the sensitive dependence on initial conditions in which a small change locally can result in larger impacts globally. Mohammad Lari is currently a fourth-year undergraduate student in the honours physiology program at UBC. Three years ago, he co-founded a non-profit organization called STEM Fellowship (http://stemfellowship.org) with a teacher in Toronto. The organization now has a presence across Canada (with more than 300 people involved in some executive or ambassadorial capacity) and works on a range of initiatives including Big Data Challenges to drive awareness of local and global sustainability issues, a peer-review journal to publish high school and undergraduate research, the Canadian Young Physicists’ Tournament (CaYPT) and dozens of mentorship and internship opportunities (which they collectively call: STEMpowerment). He has also been a youth engagement advisor to the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, the Canadian Red Cross and Science World. Malin holds an MA in Fashion Studies from Parsons School of Design in New York City and her doctoral dissertation focuses on the perception of sustainable production in luxury items. Mistra Future Fashion is a cross-disciplinary research program aiming at a systemic change within the fashion industry and society. The research is focused on enabling a Circular Economy by taking on a full system perspective in examining every step of the fashion value chain. Mistra Future Fashion is initiated & funded by MISTRA the Swedish foundation for strategic environmental research. There is no doubt that industrialization, alongside globalization and standardization have enhanced our quality of life, eased communication, and facilitated exchange. However, there is always two sides of a coin. The industrial revolution kick-started global warming, and globalization, together with colonialism and cultural imperialism, depleted our global cultural diversity and indigenous knowledge of sustainable practices. At Intangible World Heritage Organization ASBL, we work on balancing this coin. We preserve the diversity of our global cultural legacy and technological heritage of sustainable practices, adapt them to bridge with modernity demands, promote cross-cultural communication, and remove barriers of exchange. Hosted by the University of Luxembourg, ANASEA (Asia, North America, Africa, South America, Europe & Australia) project is aimed at musicians of all genres, and artists of all age, with a mission to preserve and revive global cultural legacy among the multi cultural community of Luxembourg. ANASEA engages musicians and artists through a series of periodic workshops in order to introduce them to worldwide cultural artistic heritages. ANASEA project is based on peer-to-peer learning approach whereby participants teach each other the arts and music from their countries and cultures. Gender roles are primarily socially constructed, and we can help shape future thoughts and behavior of a new generation by having an ongoing dialog. Dr. Wegner discusses inappropriate sexual behavior and violence towards women; she advocates changing the cultural dialog and socially constructed gender roles by having difficult conversations with our kids now. It's not just about parenting, it's about leadership argues Dr. Wegner. Dr. Wegner is a clinical psychologist and behavioral medicine specialist. She specializes in stress management, and the importance of maintaining ‘self’ as a parent. She sees individuals and families at Boston Behavioral Medicine, and teaches at Harvard Graduate School of Education in Child Advocacy, Group Counseling, and Cross-Cultural Counseling. Engineering has always been about solving problems and adding value to society. However, the problems we are now facing are becoming more complex meaning that engineering needs to evolve. Global challenges such as climate change need a new generation of engineers who can learn to balance the competing needs of society and nature. These engineers will blend creativity, systems thinking and behavioural science to develop solutions which can be accepted by communities around the world, adding value not only to society but also our natural world. We call these people Zero Carbon Engineers and this talk will discuss why we need them and the some of the skills they will need. David Rooney is a Professor of Chemical Engineering in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Queen’s University Belfast. His research focuses on energy generation and materials and he is the Director of the Sustainable Energy Research Group at Queen’s and Director of the Bryden Centre, a cross-border renewable research centre. At present he works with oil and gas companies, regional industry and government to advise on Zero Carbon technologies. He is the Dean of Internationalisation and Reputation for the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences and has a long history of working with international partners including time in China developing the Queen’s College at the China Medical University in Shenyang.
