Lessons from a crisis – How to achieve a climate neutral, energy secure and prosperous transition for Europe and the business sector? All across Europe, business networks have been working actively to increase climate ambition recognising the economic, social and environmental benefits of the transition towards a climate neutral, resource efficient and sustainable Europe. In January 2022, a roundtable brought together these business networks and policymakers to reflect on how businesses can support Europe’s transition towards climate neutrality and the Fit for 55 Package can deliver this transition. The past year saw a great number of policy developments as the EU and its Member States had to deal with the economic and energy related consequences of the war in Ukraine, with the RePowerEU plan, while negotiating the Fit for 55 Package. This event was an opportunity to reflect on the progress made during the past year. Speakers presented solutions developed by businesses to scale up the production and demand for renewable energy, boost energy efficiency, accelerate the decarbonisation of industry and stimulate green investments. They reflected on how policies can enable businesses to scale up solutions to deal with the current climate and energy crisis while increasing the sustainable competitiveness of the EU’s economy moving forward. On October 18 Dr. Sharon Blackie explored stories, myths, fairy tales, and archetypes illustrating the transformative potential of time spent in inner inquiry, and how doing so might help to shift the collective mindset. She highlighted ways of using the old stories to reflect on today's challenges.

During this interactive session, we discussed how time spent in solitude and in nature helps us to listen, participate in a reciprocal relationship with the animate world we belong to, and to deepen our sense of kinship. The session concluded with the challenge to attendees: what are the foundational shifts we need to make to participate in the larger possibility of metamorphosis?

The economic opportunities available to citizens in rural America have become an issue of increasing national interest and focus. Since the 2016 presidential election, policymakers and politicians from across the political spectrum have tried to understand the unique economic and workforce needs of rural communities and workers at this critical time in American history. Throughout the pandemic, many rural areas have seen an influx of urban residents in search of cheaper real estate and new ways of remote working. Recent federal legislation to address the economic fallout from the pandemic has also focused on directing new resources to rural areas. In short, there is, perhaps, a once-in--a-generation opportunity to address some of the gaps that exist between rural America and metropolitan areas. How will rural America seize this moment, and what do leaders and policymakers need to understand about rural America at this important time? This discussion will focus on what policymakers, philanthropists and politicians must get right at this moment to aggressively implement innovative solutions to help build geographically inclusive growth that includes rural areas. This includes addressing key issues around high-speed internet access and other digital solutions, identifying emerging growth industries in rural areas, and training the workforce of tomorrow for these opportunities. We will hear directly from the head of a foundation committed to this work, the leader of a national nonprofit that has received major media attention for focusing on closing the rural opportunity gap, and a California congressman who, despite representing Silicon Valley in Washington, is dedicated to addressing rural economic issues. It seems ironic to Aryan Ranjan that we live in a country where more people would rather get weather predictions from a groundhog than actually listen to climate change evidence from scientists. Yet, when we see our sea levels rising, when we see our hurricanes getting stronger, and when we see places getting flooded that have never been flooded before, we turn a blind eye. We turn a blind eye to the very problem that we have created - not as Democrats, not as Republicans, but as human beings. Unfortunately, the phrase “climate change” in and of itself has taken on a very negative connotation over the years. In fact, if you even mention the words “climate change” to anybody, it will almost always result in a heated debate. Aryan has tried. He says, "The cold hard truth is that the phrase 'climate change' has become a trigger word for both sides of the political spectrum to a point that people don’t even feel comfortable talking about it anymore." But that begs the question: Why? Why is it that we always have to take politics into account for everything? Does the thermometer give us a different temperature depending on whether we are Democrats or Republicans? Of course not! One hundred degrees is going to be 100 degrees across the board. Yet, that’s how we view things in modern society. But the real question is: Will we ever find a solution to climate change? At the rate we’re going, the simple answer is no. Because every time we take a step toward coming up with a solution for climate change, we actually end up taking four steps backward. And the media doesn’t make it any better. Based on the media, it seems as if there is no hope left. But, in Aryan's talk, he will tell you that climate change breakthroughs exist, and even more importantly, he says we have a decent shot to end this climate crisis. Aryan believes through education and adherence to climate commitments, we can make the necessary changes to protect our planet. He is a member of Citizens Climate Lobby, a non-profit, non-partisan, grassroots advocacy organization dedicated to lobbying for national legislation for climate solutions. Through this organization, Aryan has been able to meet with local elected officials to discuss climate solutions. He is also Founder and President of the Climate Change club at American Heritage, which empowers other high schoolers at AHS by giving them the chance to discuss concerns and solutions regarding climate change. Additionally, Aryan is Captain of the Junior High Congressional Debate team, Treasurer of the Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society, Officer of Model United Nations, and a member of Congressman Ted Deutch’s Congressional Youth Cabinet. Aryan is honored to give a TED Talk and hopes he is able to influence more youth to get involved with climate action. However, less focus has been placed on the key role that a circular economy plays. This event highlights the critical role that building a circular European economy plays to meet the EU’s climate goals. This event is also an opportunity to showcase the work of the CLG Europe’s Taskforce for Climate Neutral and Circular Materials and Products (‘The Materials and Products Taskforce’) 12 months after its launch at COP26.
