Dr. Christine Wörlen is the former head of renewable energies for the German Energy Agency, she's worked in 60 countries for the UN and she's a consultant. Green Energy Futures caught up with Dr. Wörlen in Edmonton, Alberta when she was there to speak at City Hall and Grant MacEwan University about the German Renewable Energy Revolution.  interview and talk were recorded by the Green Energy Futures project in September 2011.

Fariha, 23, invested in a business with a $500 micro-grant from the Non-Formal Approach to Training, Education and Jobs in Afghanistan (NATEJA) project which supports aspiring entrepreneurs and creates private sector job. The project provides funding, mentoring, business counseling support and trains micro-entrepreneurs in business, accounting, and marketing in rural of Afghanistan. To date, about 2,500 micro-entrepreneurs (30 percent are women entrepreneurs) have been selected from 17,000 applicants in Kabul, Nangarhar and Balkh provinces. The project is implemented by the Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs, Martyrs and Disabled.

We all have times when we try to restrict what we consume – whether it’s deleting social media apps from phones, spending less time online shopping or maybe giving up sugar. Ferrill, a staff member in DePaul’s Department of English, shares her first-hand experience placing limits on something that’s present in almost every aspect of daily life in her talk, “What I learned the year I tried to give up plastic.” In 2015, Ferrill challenged herself to give up plastic over concern about how the material harms our environment. Any piece of plastic that she could not avoid, she would keep. For a year, as she struggled to live plastic free, she documented her experiences in a blog called dumpingplastic.com. The idea was sparked during a first-year writing class she taught at DePaul University. Today, Ferrill is the assistant director of graduate programs and department operations in DePaul’s Department of English. Previously, she worked as a grant writer in Chicago and for a nonprofit in Honduras. In 2015, Ferrill challenged herself to give up plastic over concern about how the material harms our environment.
