Join Pathways to Planetary Health for a conversation with Rebecca Henderson, Harvard University economics professor, and Jonathan F.P. Rose, as they discuss the failings of modern capitalism and how businesses imbued with a sense of purpose can help create more sustainable, ethical economies powered by motivated and dignified personnel. Henderson observes that capitalism is the most successful economic system in history, and yet it’s in danger of destroying itself - and our world. Purpose can help. Cutting-edge research has found that firms that view profits as a means to an end, rather than as an end it itself – and who view their mission as the creation of social value – are often significantly more productive and creative than more conventional firms. They can also be powerful allies in driving the social and political change that is needed if we are to address the great problems of our time. This interactive online event is part of a continuing series in the Garrison Institute’s Forum on Pathways to Planetary Health (PPH). Building on the Garrison Institute’s earlier Climate, Mind and Behavior (CMB) program, Pathways to Planetary Health explores the moral, ethical, and human behavioral dimensions of the search for regenerative solutions, including Half-Earth, Ecological Civilization, Regenerative Economics, and Societal Altruism. How many different kinds of birds have you seen locally? In this Speaker Series talk, Eric Moore - local bird expert and owner of the Lookout (formerly Jay's Bird Barn) will use eBird data to talk about the species richness of birds in Arizona, with particular attention to Yavapai County. There are so many interesting and unique species that have been observed here! Find out who, when, and where to spot them. Eric Moore is the owner of The Lookout, in Prescott, AZ (formerly Jay's Bird Barn). Eric's interest in wild birds began early in life in New England, and continued when he moved to Tucson, Arizona at the ripe old age of six. When he was 13 years old Eric joined the Tucson Audubon Society chapter which helped accelerate his learning and love for wild birds. As an adult, after working in the grocery industry for over twenty years, Eric decided to combine his retail experience with his love of wild birds, and opened Jay's Bird Barn, a backyard wild bird and nature store in 2003. For the last twenty years Eric has been writing a weekly column (on wild birds) in the Prescott Courier, and he has been guiding bird walks to help individuals create a connection to nature through wild birds. On April 3rd of 2023 the name Jay's Bird Barn was retired and the store moved to a new location with a new name--The Lookout, located at 1230 Willow Creek Road in Prescott, at the intersection of Black Drive and Willow Creek Road.
