Jackson, Ph.D. is a global trade consultant, author, scholar, and speaker. Dr. Jackson encourages global trade policies and company practices that put global citizen welfare over economic growth and business bottom line. Dr. Jackson’s passion and efforts have been inspired by her experiences living and working in the Southern African, Latin American, and Caribbean regions. She has earned the Fulbright Scholar Award (Dominican Republic); SCORE Greater Los Angeles Certificate of Entrepreneurship; and effective teaching awards from two different universities, with the most recent from UCLA Extension. She was also nominated for the 2017 Los Angeles Business Journal Women’s Award, which recognizes the achievements of women leaders in the business community. After participating in a five-day march against strip-mining Blair Mountain in West Virginia in 2011, Jackson Koeppel became committed to exploring alternatives to the extractive economy. While on a summer program in Highland Park, MI, that same year, Koeppel found a cause he could get behind. Highland Park is part of the Detroit metropolitan area and the city’s population had dropped by more 80 percent since the auto factories left the area. In 2011, about 1,000 of the city’s 1,500 streetlights were decommissioned by the local utility to ameliorate a $4 million municipal debt. Residential streets were left in the dark. In response, Koeppel co-founded Soulardarity – a community organization that’s coordinating the installation of 200 solar streetlights and organizing a cooperative of residents, businesses, organizations, and institutions. The cooperative will maintain the streetlights with annual membership dues. The solar streetlights are affordable, environment-friendly, and provide a powerful avenue for engaging local citizens in conversations about sustainability and community resilience.

Once a farmer herself, Naeen is managing an irrigation infrastructure project in Jamaica that will boost farmers' productivity in a socially inclusive, gender-equitable and climate-sensitive way. Naeen Jackson is a Food Safety and Environmental Consultant at Jamaica's Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. A passionate farmer, she is also an avid agricultural entrepreneur. Jackson has implemented food and environmental management systems including impact assessment and policy development. She is the Lead Consultant (Enhanced Agricultural Production, Marketing Facilities and Systems) for the Essex Valley Agriculture Development Project, funded by the UK and administered through the Caribbean Development Bank. It is the largest single investment (£35.5 M) in irrigation infrastructure in Jamaica, and seeks to enhance the productivity of farmers in the Essex Valley in a socially inclusive, gender-equitable and climate-sensitive way. It is expected to impact the lives and livelihoods of more than 700 farmers on 700 hectares of land by providing irrigation water and improved access to local and global markets. Whenever we use electricity, we interact with a national and global infrastructure of the extraction, transportation, and combustion of non-renewable natural resources. There is a great deal of public outcry on the impacts we feel from pollution and climate change, but relatively little about the communities impoverished by energy providers that prioritize shareholder profit to human well-being. It is these impacted communities where there is the greatest potential to transform the energy system from one dominated by big dirty energy to one that is distributed, clean, and democratically controlled by people. In this talk, Jackson Koeppel will share about Soulardarity's work on community-owned solar street lighting in Highland Park, MI, the history of the monopoly energy system in the US, and why a transition to clean energy means more than just changing where we get our power - it means changing who has it.
