For millennia Indigenous communities have been guardians of their environments, protecting flora and fauna, using their traditional knowledge and wisdom passed down over generations to live in balance within their ecosystems. Today Indigenous peoples safeguard 80% of the biodiversity left in the world, and protecting those lands and waters is crucial to mitigating the climate crisis, because those biodiverse areas are among the planet’s major carbon sinks. Indigenous peoples are the ancestral owners of nearly half of the intact forest left across the entire Amazon Basin.

Nemonte Nenquimo, a leader from the Waorani community in Ecuador and a founding member of the Indigenous-led nonprofit organization Ceibo Alliance and its partner, Amazon Frontlines, discusses why respecting Indigenous people’s internationally recognized rights to decide the future of their territories, cultures, and lives is critically urgent for the protection of our world’s most important rainforest, our climate, and life on our planet.

Nemonte Nenquimo was named one of Time’s 100 most influential people on Earth in 2020 (the only Indigenous woman on the list) and won the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize among other major awards, for her struggles against the ravages of oil drilling in her people’s ancestral lands.

Prof. Li Zheng, vice president of the Institute of Climate Change and Sustainable Development (ICCSD) at Tsinghua University, presented the progress of nature-based solutions (NbS) in China at the C+NbS annual meeting 2020. Invited by the United Nations, China, co-leads the NbS coalition initiated in September 2019, together with New Zealand. In order to shape and promote the concept, ICCSD set up the C+NbS platform, receiving support from TNC, aimed at multi-stakeholders collective wisdom to contribute China’s solutions to global NbS discussion. ICCSD is a climate-focused think-do tank founded in October 2017. It’s inaugural president, Mr. XIE Zhenhua, is China’s Special Advisor on Climate. ICCSD is an open and synergetic platform for interdisciplinary research, talent training and policy dialogues. It aims to provide solutions to global climate change and sustainability challenges, and to propose coordinated goals, strategies, pathways, and policies to decision-makers in China. ICCSD currently serves as the inaugural Secretariat of Global Alliance of Universities on Climate (GAUC). Reconciling Ways of Knowing Series, Dialogue 3: "Braiding Ways of Knowing" This dialogue originally aired on Thursday, September 24 at 8:30 am Pacific / 10:30 am Central / 12:30 pm Atlantic. Known for her award-winning books Gathering Moss: A Natural & Cultural History of Mosses and Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teaching of Plants, amongst many other ways in which she has had an impact as a teacher, researcher, and writer, Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer spoke in dialogue with friend, colleague, renowned ethnobotanist and moderator Dr. Nancy Turner on the theme of Braiding Ways of Knowing. Drs. Wall Kimmerer and Turner discussed how Dr. Wall Kimmerer had concluded that Indigenous and scientific ways of knowing could be braided together in her work on the role of traditional ecological knowledge in ecological restoration and the ecology of mosses. Fellow Reconciling Ways of Knowing project founders Miles Richardson, O.C., Dr. David Suzuki, and Elder Dr. Dave Courchene, Jr. joined Dr. Turner in the dialogue with Dr. Wall Kimmerer to connect her findings and reflections from her work to the objective of the Reconciling Ways of Knowing project to facilitate pathways for building better relationships across ways of knowing and for creating better stewardship outcomes together.
