They emerge with the rains in a riot of colors, like a coral reef on the forest floor. Red, yellow, brown, spotted, slick, porous, gilled - mushrooms come in a dazzling variety of shapes, sizes, and descriptions. What we see, however, whether on the ground or on stumps and rotting logs, is only a tiny part of a fungus. Sometimes called the "ephemeral fruiting body," a mushroom is by nature temporary, rising to spread spores before melting back into the soil. In this talk by local mushroom expert (and former Arizona Mushroom Society president) Chris May, learn all you wanted to know about the mushrooms of Arizona: some you can eat, some to avoid, and most of all, how to open your eyes to the marvelous fungal diversity all around us. Chris May grew up in the forested Bradshaw Mountains south of Prescott surrounded by colorful mushrooms every monsoon season, but never knew anything about them until he picked and identified a porcini mushroom in 2012. Since then, they have become a passion bordering on obsession, to the point of serving as president of the Arizona Mushroom Society from 2016 to 2019. He is a member of the Toxicology Committee of the North American Mycological Association and a NAMA-designated mushroom identifier who is consulted by local physicians and veterinarians in cases of suspected mushroom poisoning. He has guided forays at the Telluride Mushroom Festival and many other events, and has traveled as far afield as Poland, Italy, Maine and Oregon in search of the jewels of the forest. He has safely picked and eaten 88 different species of fungi in Arizona. He and his wife Barbara live in Scottsdale, where he is a radiologist.

Chef Richard Jones reveals some of the complex issues surrounding food production and consumption and shares what the future of food could be. This exciting talk explores the intersection of food, flavor, agriculture, sustainability, and technology. Richard Jones’ journey as a chef has spanned the globe. His culinary adventure began in Adelaide, South Australia where the diversity of food and wine influenced his green thumbs and flavor palate. Richard moved to Nashville in 2000 and has worked under chefs Brian Uhl, Michael Tuohy, and Sean Brock. Developing a personal chef business and catering for companies large and small led to chefing for musical artists including Sugarland, Zac Brown Band, U2 and Keith Urban for a premiere touring company. In the summer of 2012, Richard joined Green Door Gourmet as Executive Chef. This unique position was created to educate consumers, develop recipes to help CSA members better utilize produce, and further the education and encouragement of community supported agriculture in the Middle Tennessee area. Richard is helping change the face of true farm to fork dining in real time with consumers and chefs across the Nashville foodscape. Richard Wolfson discusses his book "Nuclear Choices for the Twenty-First Century: A Citizen's Guide", an authoritative and unbiased guide to nuclear technology and the controversies that surround it. Are you for nuclear power or against it? What's the basis of your opinion? Did you know a CT scan gives you some 2 millisieverts of radiation? Do you know how much a millisievert is? Does irradiation make foods safer or less safe? What is the point of a bilateral Russia–US nuclear weapons treaty in a multipolar world? These are nuclear questions that call for nuclear choices, and this book equips citizens to make these choices informed ones. It explains, clearly and accessibly, the basics of nuclear technology and describes the controversies surrounding its use. Richard Wolfson is a Benjamin F. Wissler Professor of Physics, Emeritus, at Middlebury College, where he also taught in the Environmental Studies Program and at the Middlebury Institute in Monterey. He did undergraduate work in physics and philosophy at MIT and Swarthmore, holds a Master’s in environmental studies from the University of Michigan and a PhD in physics from Dartmouth. Wolfson’s research involves the Sun, climate change, and solar energy. Other published work encompasses medical physics, plasma physics, electronics, nuclear issues, and astrophysics. His books "Nuclear Choices for the Twenty-first Century: A Citizen’s Guide" and "Simply Einstein: Relativity Demystified" exemplify Wolfson’s interest in making science accessible to nonscientists. Wolfson has published in Scientific American and World Book Encyclopedia. His video courses for The Teaching Company’s Great Courses series include Einstein’s Relativity and the Quantum Revolution, Physics in Your Life, Earth’s Changing Climate, Physics and Our Universe, and Understanding Modern Electronics. Throughout the years, Dr. Damle has treated countless patients suffering from the health consequences of climate change. These illnesses, ranging from tick-borne illness and allergies to asthma and waterborne illness, are not uncommon or unique but have been occurring with increasing frequency over the past several years and disproportionately affect particular communities. Dr. Damle is the past president of the American College of Physicians (the largest specialty organization in the U.S.), Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University, and Founding Partner of South County Internal Medicine in Wakefield Rhode Island. He was a co-author on a seminal position paper of the American College of Physicians in 2015 and has for the past five years has been speaking to both professional and lay audiences around the world on the Human Health Effects of Climate Change. He is a founding member of the Medical Societies Consortium on Climate Change and sits on the Board of Advisors. He has advocated for mitigation of factors leading to climate change and their adverse effects on health to the House of Representatives and the Senate and locally with the Rhode Island Department of Health. Yvette Williams MBE from Justice4Grenfell shares her moving account of what she witnessed on the night of the fire at Grenfell Tower and how after years working behind the scenes, she was motivated to become a more vocal and visible community activist. Yvette is interviewed by Ben Bailey Smith an English rapper, comedian, actor, screenwriter, radio presenter and voiceover artist, who is also known as Doc Brown. Yvette has lived in North Kensington for over 30 years. She previously worked with the Mangrove Community Association and has served tenure as a Trustee for the Tabernacle Community Centre and the Pepper Pot Club (African Caribbean Elders Centre). She is also a founding member of Operation Black Vote – a national campaign encouraging BME communities to engage in the democratic process. She has worked with a number of campaigns including those for Stephen Lawrence and Frank Critchlow. Yvette has a professional background working in education and criminal justice. Both Yvette and her daughter witnessed the fire at Grenfell Tower, after being alerted by a family friend who was evacuated from one of the walkways. The circular economy is an economic model focused on eliminating waste and inefficiency and promoting greater resource productivity. The carbon footprint of wasted food is approximately 3.3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) released into the atmosphere on an annual basis. The shift to a circular economy is not only about managing waste—it presents a new economic paradigm for rethinking how we design, use, and reuse our resources (both products and services), with an estimated economic output potential of USD $4.5 trillion per year by 2030.

The COVID-19 pandemic showed in many cases all the drawbacks of the present economic model- the linear economy (‘take-make-dispose’).
