It seems ironic to Aryan Ranjan that we live in a country where more people would rather get weather predictions from a groundhog than actually listen to climate change evidence from scientists. Yet, when we see our sea levels rising, when we see our hurricanes getting stronger, and when we see places getting flooded that have never been flooded before, we turn a blind eye. We turn a blind eye to the very problem that we have created - not as Democrats, not as Republicans, but as human beings. Unfortunately, the phrase “climate change” in and of itself has taken on a very negative connotation over the years. In fact, if you even mention the words “climate change” to anybody, it will almost always result in a heated debate. Aryan has tried. He says, "The cold hard truth is that the phrase 'climate change' has become a trigger word for both sides of the political spectrum to a point that people don’t even feel comfortable talking about it anymore." But that begs the question: Why? Why is it that we always have to take politics into account for everything? Does the thermometer give us a different temperature depending on whether we are Democrats or Republicans? Of course not! One hundred degrees is going to be 100 degrees across the board. Yet, that’s how we view things in modern society. But the real question is: Will we ever find a solution to climate change? At the rate we’re going, the simple answer is no. Because every time we take a step toward coming up with a solution for climate change, we actually end up taking four steps backward. And the media doesn’t make it any better. Based on the media, it seems as if there is no hope left. But, in Aryan's talk, he will tell you that climate change breakthroughs exist, and even more importantly, he says we have a decent shot to end this climate crisis. Aryan believes through education and adherence to climate commitments, we can make the necessary changes to protect our planet. He is a member of Citizens Climate Lobby, a non-profit, non-partisan, grassroots advocacy organization dedicated to lobbying for national legislation for climate solutions. Through this organization, Aryan has been able to meet with local elected officials to discuss climate solutions. He is also Founder and President of the Climate Change club at American Heritage, which empowers other high schoolers at AHS by giving them the chance to discuss concerns and solutions regarding climate change. Additionally, Aryan is Captain of the Junior High Congressional Debate team, Treasurer of the Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society, Officer of Model United Nations, and a member of Congressman Ted Deutch’s Congressional Youth Cabinet. Aryan is honored to give a TED Talk and hopes he is able to influence more youth to get involved with climate action. As with many aspects of American life, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately impacted BIPOC communities. For Black businesses, this meant closing their doors and for Black workers, either being laid off or made to work in unsafe conditions. In a system where Black workers are proportionally overrepresented in low-wage work and sharply underrepresented in executive positions, this negative impact is exacerbated. However discouraging this reality is, it serves as a call to action to close the wide, possibly widening, racial gap. At INFORUM, a panel of experts on the economic state of Black America will provide insight on what a path to equal and just recovery looks like, expanding upon research by McKinsey & Company. Further, juxtaposing the current reality with the prosperity offered by a better future, they will drive home the need to make change, and do so quickly. Alex Gladstein, vice president of strategy for the Oslo Freedom Forum, has connected many dissidents and civil society groups with business leaders, philanthropists, policymakers and artists, to promote free and open societies. He is the singularity expert at Singularity University and advises Blockchain Capital. Fadi Elsalameen, who was born in Hebron, is a critic of Hamas and the Palestinian Authority and has received death threats for his pro-democracy and anti-corruption work. As global leaders gathered for the UN Climate Ambition Summit on Wednesday, September 20, WECAN hosted an event, right across the street from the UN, bringing together women leaders to call on governments to reckon with their role in fueling climate chaos, and harm against communities and the planet by continuing the extraction of fossil fuels. Governments must invest in and deploy a Just Transition that is grounded in a climate justice framework and uplifts care economies, community-led solutions, Indigenous rights, and a different vision than business as usual. During the event, we hosted two panels detailed below.

In the first panel, “Women Ending the Era of Fossil Fuels," speakers shared expertise and frameworks for transitioning away from extraction and ongoing policy advocacy and campaigns that seek to phase out fossil fuels and other harmful extractive practices.

Speakers included: Sharon Lavigne, Founder and President of RISE St. James, Turtle Island/USA; Farhana Yamin, Coordinator, Climate Justice & Just Transition Donor Collaborative, United Kingdom; Eriel Tchekwie Deranger (Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation), Executive Director of Indigenous Climate Action, Canada; Tzeporah Berman, Chair, Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, Canada; moderation and comments by Osprey Orielle Lake, Executive Director, WECAN.

In the second panel, "Women-led Climate Solutions Are Central to a Just Transition and Thriving Future," leaders shared how to implement and support solutions that are advancing a Just Transition, and recent successes and victories for community-led climate just solutions!

However, less focus has been placed on the key role that a circular economy plays. This event highlights the critical role that building a circular European economy plays to meet the EU’s climate goals. This event is also an opportunity to showcase the work of the CLG Europe’s Taskforce for Climate Neutral and Circular Materials and Products (‘The Materials and Products Taskforce’) 12 months after its launch at COP26.
