Only a holistic focus on food systems and their sovereignty-struggles will lead to truly sustainable transitions for communities, to curb the effects of climate change. Rachel Reckinger is a food sociologist and anthropologist at the University of Luxembourg and head of the research project Sustainable Food Practices, contributing to current debates on food sovereignty, biodiversity degradation, limits to growth, inequity, the search for more sustainable ways of production, consumption and governance – as well as policy coherence tackling them –, all requiring a dedicated response from the social sciences. She is also taking part in active policy work with the co-creation of a Food Policy Council for Luxembourg, as a multi-stakeholder discussion and negotiation group for more resilient food system alternatives, and holds a mandate in Luxembourg’s Conseil Supérieur pour un Développement Durable. Tucked away in northern Arizona, the upper section of the Verde River, along with its critical tributaries Granite and Sycamore creeks, are some of the most ecologically healthy and economically important free-flowing rivers remaining in Arizona. Due to its remarkable ecological and cultural importance, the Upper Verde River area is being proposed for a federal Wild & Scenic River designation. This designation will provide resources for management and restoration, protect clean water supplies, and maintain the river's ecosystem as it is for future generations. As a lifelong resident of the region and with multi-generational roots in New Mexico, Rachel has deep ties and commitment to the Southwest. She is inspired by place-based and community-based river and water advocacy because it is a powerful avenue for actualizing social and environmental justice, particularly in the era of climate change. Prior to American Rivers, Rachel did research, advocacy, and community organizing for Black Mesa Trust and various partners working to protect the Little Colorado River watershed. Before that, Rachel spent much of her career as a back and front country educator. She remains passionate about education and youth leadership.

The role of multinationals as leaders of the shift towards a circular economy is well documented, but businesses of various shapes and sizes have a significant part to play in the transition. Indeed, small businesses are well placed to innovate and make concrete changes towards the circular economy. However, these companies face a different set of challenges including access to finance, partnering with larger entities, and incorporating a circular economy business model into their strategy. In this broadcast, we are joined by Natalia Agathou from the London Waste and Recycling Board (LWARB), and William Neale from the Environment Directorate General of the European Commission. We’re also joined by Stuffstr CEO John Atcheson, who will talk about how their business has succeeded in communicating and collaborating with larger organisations to receive investment and form effective partnerships.
