Winners of the WSIS Prizes, recognizing innovative technological approaches to support sustainable development, were announced on 28 May 2024 at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS)+20 Forum High-Level Event 2024 in Geneva, Switzerland. Overall, projects from 18 countries were presented with WSIS Prizes top honours, showcasing leading efforts to bridge the digital divide, foster digital inclusion, and drive socio-economic progress on a global scale. “This year's WSIS Prizes demonstrate the innovation and energy that exist to find technological solutions to some of the globe's biggest challenges," said ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin. “These are the creative contributions that the world needs in our effort to advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals." The Interactive Tool of Policies, Terms and Conditions Applicable in the Use of Digital Platforms allows users to know and compare the information that main digital platforms collect from users, as well as the treatment given to their personal data and the options, they have within the platforms to delete or manage it. We stand at a critical moment in history for food and farming. During the last century, our extractive farming practices have contributed to the depletion of nature and brought us to the brink of a planetary emergency, resulting in climate change, catastrophic biodiversity decline and a crisis for public health. With half of our land now used for agriculture, farmers across the globe have become the primary stewards of nature, climate and health. Yet their delivery of public goods requires redesigning our businesses and industries away from systems based on extraction and growth and towards approaches based on the principles of regeneration, sustainability and the circular economy. During this talk, Henry Dimbleby discusses the complexity of our food systems and the urgent need for us to create a common language for measuring the sustainability of our farming systems. Henry Dimbleby was made lead non-executive director of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in 2018. In 2019 the Environment Secretary appointed him to lead the National Food Strategy, an independent review into our food system. Formerly Henry co-founded the Leon restaurant chain (2004). He was a co-founder of the not-for-profit Sustainable Restaurant Association (2009) and the charity Chefs in Schools (2018). He co-wrote The School Food Plan (2013), which set out actions to transform what children eat in schools and how they learn about food. Henry previously worked as a Strategy Consultant at Bain & Company (1995-2002) where he advised businesses on strategic and organisational transformation. His first job was as a commis chef in Bruno Loubet’s Michelin-starred kitchen at The Four Seasons, Inn on The Park.  Climate change is everywhere. Scientists say we have seven years left to turn things around. We are at a crossroads, and the clock is winding down. With this reality, there is still hope we can save the planet. The way to make progress at the speed and scale that the climate crisis demands is getting the world’s largest corporate emitters and their investors to act on this growing crisis. The only question now is how fast can they act to prevent the next climate catastrophe and realize the massive opportunities in the shift to a more just and sustainable economy.

 

 

 

Mindy Lubber is the CEO and President of the sustainability nonprofit organization Ceres. She has been at the helm since 2003, and under her leadership, the organization and its powerful networks have grown significantly in size and influence. As a well-known global thought leader, Mindy has inspired coalitions of institutional investors, corporate boards, C-suite executives and capital market leaders to factor sustainability risks and opportunities into decision-making. She regularly speaks to high-level world and national political leaders on clean energy and water policies, and has helped to change the political conversation around tackling climate change to one focused on jobs and the economy. She has received numerous awards for her leadership. In 2020, Lubber received the 'Champions of the Earth' award - the highest environmental honor from the United Nations. In the same year, Lubber made Barron’s Magazine’s inaugural list of the 100 most influential women in U.S. finance and was again a member of the list in 2021.  

 

 

 

Prior to Ceres, Mindy served as a Regional Administrator at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under former President Bill Clinton. She also founded Green Century Capital Management and served as the director of the Massachusetts Public Interest Research Group (MASSPIRG). The Roundtable on SDG 9 and 17 “Partnerships for inclusive and sustainable digital development" of the Regional Forum on Sustainable Development for the UNECE Region will take place on 29 March 2023 from 15:00 to 18:00 CET. It will be held in a hybrid format, online and in WMO Premises in Geneva, Switzerland. The Roundtable is co-organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), with the contribution of UNEP, UNIDO and UN Women. The need to address green and digital transitions jointly and the link that those two notions hold is of growing importance in the Europe and Central Asia region and became a defining characteristic to reach the 2030 Agenda. The UN75 Declaration and its subsequent Common Agenda deployed by the UN Secretary-General António Guterres calls on renewed efforts to improve digital cooperation and to protect the planet. Those two notions are brought together under the UN SG Roadmap for Digital Cooperation which addresses Digital Environmental Sustainability. The Global Digital Compact, proposed under the Common Agenda and informed by the Roadmap, will be agreed upon at the Summit of the Future in September 2024 which reviews the progress made on the UN75 Declaration. In light of the above, this roundtable will share policy recommendations and actions to support an inclusive and green digital transformation. It will look at factors hindering internet connectivity access and use across communities and locations. It will discuss the importance of robust digital infrastructure as a prerequisite for the successful uptake of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) solutions serving climate action. Overall, the roundtable will review the achievement made on SDG 9 and 17 indicators related to internet connectivity access and use, ICT infrastructure, innovation, and the development, transfer, and dissemination of environmentally sound technologies. Recognizing the need for strengthened digital cooperation, this roundtable will emphasize a systemic approach to digital development. Collaboration between the ICT and the Environment sectors is even more so crucial to a successful environmentally-sound digital development. ​​​​​​​​​​​​​ GUIDING QUESTIONS ​The roundtable discussion will be guided by the following questions: What are the key solutions to developing robust and reliable ICT infrastructure that can provide universal, affordable, and safe internet connectivity? What are effective policies and actions that governments can implement to limit the negative impact of the manufacturing and use of digital and ICT solutions and devices on the environment, such as e-waste generation, greenhouse gas emission, or loss of rare and raw earth materials? How can innovative ICT-based solutions and emerging technologies be leveraged to support governments in mitigating environmental risks and challenges? Which kind of partnerships are needed to achieve this objective and what are the effective mechanisms that can be leveraged?
