How Inequality Gets Inside Our Heads |Picket and Wilkinson

Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett's The Spirit Level has been one of the most influential non-fiction books of the last decade, showing how less equal societies fare worse than more equal ones across a whole range of social measures - health, education, levels of violence, life expectancy and child wellbeing - and initiating the significant public attention now given to the impacts of inequality. Arguing that societies based on fundamental equalities, sharing and reciprocity produce much higher levels of wellbeing than those based on excessive individualism, competitiveness and social aggression, The Inner Level sheds important new light into how we should organise the way we live together. Sustainable Human Launches New Gift-Based Economic System

Find out how you can participate in creating a new economic system that helps humanity to live in harmony with each other and the planet: http://sustainablehuman.com/

The mission of Sustainable Human is to assist in creating and promoting a new economic system based on the collective voluntary gifts of everyday people. The goal is to transition from our current, scarcity-based economic system to a new system capable of creating abundance for all. Bypassing the monetary system, we will voluntarily collaborate on projects aimed at creating goods and services that are given freely to the world, helping to create a bottom-up, participatory, global gift economy.

After 7+ years of holding space for a conversation about the deep underlying roots of our many sustainability-related crises, the time has come to be more proactive towards a solution.

We recognize at the very root of many of our systemic issues is an economic system that measures progress and success in only one metric - growth or profit. Economic growth means consuming more resources each year than were consumed in the prior year, which means that more of Nature must be turned into product for human consumption. The scale has reached ecocidal proportions.

At the same time, fewer people are able to meet their needs from the present economic system as wealth inequality only continues to grow. Complicating matters is the fact that technology is rapidly replacing human workers in a variety of ways in both the virtual and creative markets. The idea of income being attached to work is coming undone.

We need a new economy and it is going to be up to each of us to co-create one.

Sustainable Human is creating a new, voluntary, global gift economy called the Sustainable Human Gift Economy Network (powered by Hylo - an emerging, open-source social network designed to help communities to collaborate). Its purpose is to transcend the economics of scarcity and transition humanity into the economy capable of delivering sustainable abundance for all.

The idea is simple.

We all have a gift to give. When we work together in sharing our gifts, we are able to accomplish amazing achievements. However, most ideas we create are limited by the need to make a profit. No longer.

Now we can voluntarily work together using our unique gifts and skills to create anything we want and give it freely to the world. As more people decide to join the gift economy, the size and scope of the gifts will grow to a point where people will be able to meet some of their needs through this economy, reducing the need for us to participate in the life-destroying, soul-crushing, industrial, growth economy.

Two American Families: 1991-2024 by Frontline
A chronicle of the lives and economic struggles of two families in Milwaukee, Wisconsin — one Black and one white — across more than three decades, this “knockout documentary†(The New York Times) raises unsettling questions about the changing nature of the American economy. This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: https://www.pbs.org/donate/ “Two American Families: 1991-2024†documents the saga of two families, the Stanleys and the Neumanns, who have spent the past 34 years battling to keep from sliding into poverty, and who refuse to give up despite upheaval in the U.S. economy. When the team first began documenting the families’ lives in 1991, the Neumanns and Stanleys were both struggling to adapt to a new, global economy and the trend towards part-time, lower-wage work. With profound intimacy, the documentary follows the stories of the Stanleys and the Neumanns across six presidential administrations and offers a powerful window into how they and their now-grown children have fared while trying to stay afloat in an economy that has presented challenge after challenge for them. “There are so many people struggling the same way with the cost of everything and not getting enough on your paycheck to cover your monthly expenses,†said Terry Neumann, who was a mom of young kids when the documentary’s producers began filming with her and is now in her early 60s. “It’s like we haven’t come very far.†“I won’t give up,†said Jackie Stanley, who is working as a real estate agent while entering her 70s. “Two American Families: 1991-2024†is a FRONTLINE production with Okapi Productions LLC and Public Affairs Television, Inc. in association with Left/Right Docs. The producers and directors are Tom Casciato and Kathleen Hughes. The co-producer is Andrew Fredericks. The senior producers are Frank Koughan and Nina Chaudry. The writer is Kathleen Hughes. The correspondent is Bill Moyers. The editor-in-chief and executive producer of FRONTLINE is Raney Aronson-Rath.

Doughnut Economics: A Framework for a Regenerative and Distributive Society
This interactive online Forum was hosted by the Pathways to Planetary Health initiative at the Garrison Institute.

On June 24, Garrison Institute Co-founder Jonathan F.P. Rose spoke with Jonathan F.P. Rose, Leonora Grcheva, and Erinch Sahan of Doughnut Economics Action Lab. In this thought-provoking discussion, they explored Doughnut Economics, which asks the question, "What is the goal of economics?" and answered it with a purpose: "Social and ecological wellbeing rather than growth or many other economic indicators that we pay too much attention to." They began with Kate describing the basic idea of Doughnut Economics, and then heard how Leonora, who leads the work with city and municipal governments at Doughnut Economic Action Lab (DEAL), is working with many cities to implement these ideas, and some of the exciting examples. Erinch then described how Doughnut Economics is being applied to businesses. This fascinating discussion was rich with ideas about how to improve the quality of life for all of life, and their application-- a wonderful example of the "Timeless Wisdom, Timely Action" that underlies all of the Garrison Institute’s work.

About Kate Raworth: Kate Raworth (sounds like ‘Ray-worth’) is a renegade economist focused on making economics fit for 21st century realities. She is the creator of the Doughnut of social and planetary boundaries, and co-founder of Doughnut Economics Action Lab. Her internationally best-selling book Doughnut Economics: seven ways to think like a 21st century economist has been translated into over 20 languages and has been widely influential with diverse audiences, from the UN General Assembly to Pope Francis to Extinction Rebellion.
Kate is a Senior Associate at Oxford University’s Environmental Change Institute, where she teaches on the Masters in Environmental Change and Management. She is also Professor of Practice at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences.

About Leonora Grcheva: Leonora Grcheva has joined Doughnut Economics Action Lab to lead their engagement with cities, municipalities and other place-based administrations that are interested in putting Doughnut Economics into practice in their own context. Leonora is an urban planner, researcher and participation practitioner. She has over a decade of experience facilitating engagement with communities, cities and regions globally through her work as an urban planning consultant for UN-Habitat, a city leadership associate for University College London, and a community engagement consultant for built environment projects in the UK. She studied architecture in her home-country Macedonia, holds a Masters in Human Settlement from KU Leuven (Belgium), and a PhD in Urbanism from the IUAV University of Venice (Italy).

About Erinch Sahan: Erinch Sahan is the business and enterprise lead at the Doughnut Economics Action Lab. Recently, he was the chief executive of the World Fair Trade Organization and previously spent 7 years at Oxfam leading campaign initiatives and founded Oxfam’s Future of Business Initiative. Erinch has also worked at Procter & Gamble as a market strategy manager, established a furniture business and worked for Australia's aid programme. Erinch is a board member of the Social Enterprise World Forum and teaches sustainable value chains at Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership. He holds degrees in finance and law, and an honorary doctorate from Oxford Brookes University.

About Jonathan F.P. Rose: Jonathan F.P. Rose is a noted global expert in sustainable development and regenerative communities. He is Co-Founder and Board Chair for The Garrison Institute, and Founder and President of Jonathan Rose Companies, a mission-driven company focused on enhancing the health and wellness of its residents with green, energy-efficient property improvements and through its Communities of Opportunities programming. In 2024, he was awarded Bhutan’s prestigious Druk Thuksey Medal (“Order of the Beloved of the Thunder Dragonâ€) for helping create and implement the Thimphu Structure Plan, a framework for sustainable development in Bhutan’s rapidly urbanizing capital city. Jonathan founded the Pathways to Planetary Health initiative at the Garrison Institute.

The Garrison Institute’s mission is to apply the transformative power of contemplation to today’s pressing social and environmental concerns, helping build a more compassionate, resilient future. Treat donating like shopping — Peter Singer on altruism. #shorts
Peter Singer, author of "Famine, Affluence and Morality,†talks about the benefits of effective altruism and our moral obligation to help others. Effective altruism focuses on raising the minimum living standards and encourages everyone, not just the wealthy, to give and find happiness in contributing to a better world.

Singer breaks down the history of the effective altruism movement and shares the example of Zell Kravinsky, who donated most of his wealth and a kidney to a stranger, exemplifying the practice. Singer also emphasizes the need to do thorough research before donating to any cause to ensure the greatest good.
