Born in 1956 in the United States to German parents, Koch grew up in Morocco, Germany, and Canada before settling in the U.S. He studied physics and philosophy at the University of Tübingen in Germany, and earned his Ph.D. in biophysics from the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics. Koch's career is distinguished by his extensive research on the brain, particularly the visual cortex, and his development of theories about the nature and mechanisms of consciousness. He has collaborated with notable researchers like Francis Crick, co-discoverer of the structure of DNA, and their work has significantly influenced the scientific understanding of consciousness. Koch served as a professor at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) for several decades before becoming the Chief Scientist and President of the Allen Institute for Brain Science, where he has led pioneering research efforts to map, analyze, and understand the brain's complex functions. By generating a holistic understanding of Earth’s ecosystems, we transform our ability to understand climate change, and identify the best strategies to address it. With this in mind, Crowther and his team of 25 researchers are looking at ways to digitally explore the biosphere and reveal the true potential of nature-based solutions in the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss. Advances in data collection and artificial intelligence are revealing more truths about our environment and the seriousness of climate change. At the same time, it’s also helping to find new solutions that harness the power of nature itself. The Crowther Lab research is helping organizations understand the true value of nature, make more informed decisions, and start implementing nature-based solutions to climate change and biodiversity loss. There is an urgent call to repair and replenish the damage we have done not only to our environment but our communities through regenerative travel. To start the healing process, we have to think about how and why we travel. There are 5 core principles for the travel industry to re-think how we exist. 1) Whole System Thinking 2) Honouring Sense of Place 3) Community Inclusion & Partnership 4) Aspirational in Nature 5) Continual Coevolution These guidelines focus on the inclusion of local communities and nature as everything is interconnected. Only by using the strengths of each stakeholder collectively and applying conscious, continual adaptation, we will create truly sustainable, regenerative destinations. Amanda Ho is the Co-Founder of Regenerative Travel, a booking platform for the Regenerative Resorts collection of independently owned eco-luxury boutique hotels dedicated to the highest levels of social and #environmentalimpact. The privatization of water has significantly impacted communities, creating great hardships, especially on women in rural communities. Mary Grace Almandrez shares her perspective on this important issue, expanding upon the trickledown effect that lack of potable water creates. She encourages us to think about climate change through the lens of the people on the ground, and its impact on them in their day-to-day lives. Dr. Almandrez is Associate Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer at the University of Rhode Island. She is an active advocate for diversity, equity, and leads the development and sustenance of a vibrant and diverse community of students, staff, and faculty throughout the University. She joined URI from Brown University where she served as an advocate for all students to thrive in their academic and co-curricular endeavors. She supervised Residential Life, Student and Employee Accessibility Services, Student Conduct & Community Standards, and Student Support Services. She orchestrated several major reorganizations on the divisional and departmental levels. Dr. Almandrez also chaired Brown’s Threat Assessment Team. What’s your superpower? Angela Francis believes that hers might be being a mixed race economist who grew up in Derby - something that gives her a unique perspective when it comes to tackling climate change. A passionate environmentalist, Angela sees that the key to overcoming the climate challenges we face is proving to the public that transitioning to a green economy can change their lives for the better right now. Rather than trying to edge the environment to the top of a priority list already overloaded with Brexit, healthcare, crime and the economy, Angela argues that we must focus on how policy for the environment has the power to deliver real solutions to the problems people are already dealing with. Only by engaging with broader conversations about the kind of country we want to be will the environmental sector be able to design policies that a farmer in Cumbria or a factory worker in Derby will get behind. Angela Francis started as an accountant in the energy industry before moving into economic development where she has worked for the last 18 years. Throughout her career, she has always found ways to focus on how our human systems – energy, production, consumption, transport and planning – need to change to come into line with our planetary ones. After finding her home in the environmental advocacy sector, Angela is now Chief Advisor on Economics and Economic Development at WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature). She provides economic advice across the climate, food and biodiversity programmes, as well as leading on trade and industrial policy for a green transition.
