Walter Bresette, a member of the Red Cliff Band of the Lake Superior Chippewa (Ojibwe), was a passionate educator and eloquent speaker. He championed tribal sovereignty, American Indian treaty rights, and environmentalism.

Bresette emerged as a leader during the 1980s Northern Wisconsin spearfishing controversies, organizing rallies and embodying an intelligent, inclusive model of activism. His work remains an example for human rights activists today.

Despite immense pressure, including threats of starvation and death over six days, the Chiefs of Red Lake firmly rejected the Dawes Act. Their unwavering resolve, driven by a profound love for future generations, strengthened their fight.

This historical resistance continues to inspire. Renee's powerful message today validates and reinforces the ongoing struggle for the Rights of Mother Earth.
