Jackson, Ph.D. is a global trade consultant, author, scholar, and speaker.  Climate change is everywhere. Scientists say we have seven years left to turn things around. We are at a crossroads, and the clock is winding down. With this reality, there is still hope we can save the planet. The way to make progress at the speed and scale that the climate crisis demands is getting the world’s largest corporate emitters and their investors to act on this growing crisis. The only question now is how fast can they act to prevent the next climate catastrophe and realize the massive opportunities in the shift to a more just and sustainable economy.

 

 

 

Mindy Lubber is the CEO and President of the sustainability nonprofit organization Ceres. She has been at the helm since 2003, and under her leadership, the organization and its powerful networks have grown significantly in size and influence. As a well-known global thought leader, Mindy has inspired coalitions of institutional investors, corporate boards, C-suite executives and capital market leaders to factor sustainability risks and opportunities into decision-making. She regularly speaks to high-level world and national political leaders on clean energy and water policies, and has helped to change the political conversation around tackling climate change to one focused on jobs and the economy. She has received numerous awards for her leadership. In 2020, Lubber received the 'Champions of the Earth' award - the highest environmental honor from the United Nations. In the same year, Lubber made Barron’s Magazine’s inaugural list of the 100 most influential women in U.S. finance and was again a member of the list in 2021.  

 

 

 

Prior to Ceres, Mindy served as a Regional Administrator at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under former President Bill Clinton. She also founded Green Century Capital Management and served as the director of the Massachusetts Public Interest Research Group (MASSPIRG). Olivia Oguadinma in Nigeria discusses the role of storytelling in motivating her peers to meaningful action. Through her Gems on Earth podcast she reaches young people throughout Western Africa and beyond. Doerte Wihan, a mother of five and a kindergarten teacher in Berlin, Germany, had not given climate change much of a thought. Then she attended a student climate strike with one of her children. This one event launched her into the world of extreme climate change activism. She is now a member of the climate protest group, Extinction Rebellion. She talks about her dramatic transformation and the strength she has found being in community with fellow climate activists. Artist Shane Petzer in Barrydale, South Africa talks about turning trash into art. Through the Magpie Art Collective, he and fellow artists create breathtakingly beautiful chandeliers all made from trash. Two of these hung in the White House in the Obama’s private quarters. During this time of Coronavirus lockdown, Magpie Art Collective have partnered with the Quakers in the Western Cape to create #QuakerPeaceDoves. Find out about how you can take part in the collective remotely and turn your trash into art. And in the USA we feature Solomon Goldstein-Rose. In 2017 at the age 22 Solomon was elected to Massachusetts legislature. After a two year term, he decided he would not run again. Instead he has been ramping up his efforts to get us thinking and acting about climate change. In March just as the Covid-19 Global Pandemic shut everything down, Solomon published his first book: The 100% Solution. A Plan for Solving Climate Change. The book is filled with whimsical and technically accurate illustrations by visual artist and writer, Violet Kitchen. She tells us about the role art can play in change movements.

Join the UK Corporate Leaders Groups at the launch of its latest policy briefing 'The Best of Both Worlds: How tackling cost of living and decarbonisation creates win-wins for the UK economy'. ⏰Monday 27 June, 2-3pm BST The UK is in the midst of dual crises, with a cost-of-living crisis adding to the climate crisis. Both of these crises disproportionately affect the poorest and most vulnerable in society, who also have fewest resources to cope with changing circumstances. It is vital we tackle both crises with the urgency they require. Policy measures to address the cost-of-living crisis can be just as, if not more, effective when designed to align with the UK’s net zero target. An aligned approach to addressing the cost of living crisis and decarbonisation challenge could create win-wins for the UK economy. To examine what a cost of living crisis policy package that supports decarbonisation could look like, the UK Corporate Leaders Groups (CLG UK) commissioned Cambridge Econometrics to undertake a modelling exercise. Our evidence indicates that policies that align with the net zero target generate more favourable economic outcomes than other types of cost-of-living support policy packages, in addition to being more progressive through primarily benefitting the lowest income households most. Can you improve a neighbourhood without changing its population? Within the "Westwood Next Door" project, the M06 student group proposed interventions for the sustainable development of the Westwood-Highland Park neighbourhood, located in Seattle's periphery. Under the motto small measures for big changes, M06 reshaped the area taking into consideration the residents' needs and interests while at the same time avoiding the gentrification of the neighbourhood. Relevant features of their strategy were the promotion of sustainable thinking and community engagement as well as the promotion of sustainable means of transportation, the greening of central streetscapes, temporary uses of brownfields, and vacant buildings for the community life to thrive in the neighbourhood. Accelerating industrial decarbonisation: Driving demand for climate neutral materials & products Tuesday 9 November, 2021 COP26, WMB Business Pavilion, Blue Zone, SEC, Glasgow Achieving a climate neutral, circular and competitive economy requires policy innovation that is cross-sectoral and cross-value chain to accelerate the development of climate neutral materials and manufacturing processes. At this COP26 event, European policymakers and businesses discussed the key policies they see working across sectors and value chains, as well as the challenges and opportunities linked to industrial decarbonisation. The event showcased international action being driven by global alliances and the international implications of policy developments in the EU, which is being keenly watched by major competitors and importers as one of the first movers in this space. About CLG Europe Taskforce for climate neutral and circular materials and products: The event announced the creation of The CLG Europe Materials and Products Taskforce. The Taskforce is business group bringing together companies that are actively committed to committing and using climate neutral and sustainable materials, and who raise awareness about the need for EU measures to help decarbonise materials.  The Taskforce’s key objective is to drive the development, implementation and support of more ambitious, future-proof policies, programmes and initiatives in Europe to create an ecosystem that more rapidly shifts away from the energy and resource intensive production of materials to materials that are produced without using fossil fuels or emitting GHGs as by-products. The Taskforce aims to do this through policy engagement, for example, driving demand side policies to be implemented through European legislation and through the development of the evidence -base that these policies will be both environmentally beneficial as well as advantageous to the EU’s economy, its industrial ecosystems and their employment and social impacts. The taskforce will be cross-sectoral and cross-value chain with an ambitious standpoint that builds clear outreach to EU decision makers.

Ari Matusiak is CEO of Rewiring America, a growing nonprofit working to launch a movement that electrifies everything, starting with our 121 million households. We are motivated by the fact that 90 percent of all emissions in the U.S. are energy-related, and 42 percent of those energy emissions come from the decisions we make in our homes: how we heat our air and water, cook our food, and dry our clothes, and what kind of cars we drive. Ari is the Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Purpose Venture Group, a social impact advisory firm, and incubator that builds community-centered ventures to address climate and economic inequality. He has almost a decade of executive leadership and operational experience in renewable energy and household electrification. Ari served in the Obama White House as Special Assistant to the President and Director of Private Sector Engagement. He focused on economic policy related to jobs and competitiveness and oversaw the relationship between the Administration and the private sector. He is Co-Founder and Chairman of Young Invincibles; a national nonprofit focused on delivering economic opportunity to young adults. Earlier in his career, he was the senior executive responsible for strategy and impact investing at the Rhode Island Foundation, one of the country’s oldest and largest community foundations. His efforts resulted in over $1 billion of affordable housing and thousands of new, local jobs. In addition, Ari was a fellow at the Beeck Center for Social Impact and Innovation at Georgetown University. He graduated cum laude and as a Public Interest Law Scholar from Georgetown University Law Center, and is a magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Brown University. In Jakarta, this feeling is not only experienced by motorists, but also pedestrians trying to escape the chaos to the less than ample sidewalks. Even then, they often become the victim of endangering activities of people in their vehicles, such as motorcycles to avoid traffic, as well as street vendors. Alfred Sitorus, an avid cyclist, humanist, commuter, and one of the founders & initiators of the Jakarta Pedestrian Coalition, will discuss his efforts to protect the home of the pedestrians and avoid its misuse, the sidewalk. Alfred and his peers founded the coalition back in 2011, which arises from the question of ‘who does the sidewalk actually belong to?’. Ever since, the coalition has set their goals as to return the sidewalks to its rightful owners. LEGO, who doesn't know it!? Every year, more than 90,000 tons of plastic are being produced into millions of LEGO bricks... 99% of the people we know have LEGO either in the playroom of their children or in the attic, where it is stored for the next generation of LEGO enthusiasts. It is called the most sustainable toy because generations keep it and pass it on. Talk about CHANGE! BUT, how are you going to make sure that the world's largest tire manufacturer, which processes tons of plastic into bricks, is, next to the already durability of their toys, even more environmentally friendly by 2030! Nelleke spent the first 18 years of her life in Rotterdam. She grew up in an environment where change was commonplace: in the centre of the once heavily battered city there was still a large area of sand that slowly transformed into a residential environment that radiated ambition. She learned the meaning of the phrase 'stop talking, start working'. Nelleke went to study at the Technical University of Delft, where she was to be found during the day in the lecture halls and the laboratory, and in the evenings in the company of her fraternity friends. After her PhD dissertation, she was given the opportunity to work in the US, at a company 15 miles away from The Big Apple. There she learned how to design chemical processes and how to test them in the laboratory and on a pilot scale. She also saw the power of diversity in the big city of New York. With the arrival of the internet and high tech hype at the beginning of this century she got the opportunity to work in a high tech start-up called Avantium Technologies located in Amsterdam. In the more than 13 years with that company she learned even more about the chemical industry and how people can collaborate best on technical challenges. In those years she gave birth to two beautiful sons who, just like her, are curious about the world and people. In 2014 she was given the opportunity to work at a dream job at The LEGO Group, where she and her team are working on the materials required for today's stones and the materials that will need to be used for the stones of the future.
