Jackson, Ph.D. is a global trade consultant, author, scholar, and speaker. Dr. Jackson encourages global trade policies and company practices that put global citizen welfare over economic growth and business bottom line. Dr. Jackson’s passion and efforts have been inspired by her experiences living and working in the Southern African, Latin American, and Caribbean regions. She has earned the Fulbright Scholar Award (Dominican Republic); SCORE Greater Los Angeles Certificate of Entrepreneurship; and effective teaching awards from two different universities, with the most recent from UCLA Extension. She was also nominated for the 2017 Los Angeles Business Journal Women’s Award, which recognizes the achievements of women leaders in the business community. This talk was shown live at TEDxEuropeanSustainabilityAcademy, Crete online event, 17.10.2020 Theme: ‘Making sense of climate change on Crete: Taking Action’ Prof. Phoebe Koundouri talks about the Sustainability Transition in Greece in the context of sustainable recovery post the 2020 covid19 virus pandemic. Whilst the world is focussed on the pandemic, Prof. Koundouri reminds us to pay attention to the ‘mother of all crisis’, the climate crisis. She describes the urgent need to decarbonise national energy plans and presents technological pathways to enable decarbonisation. With the aim of ‘leaving no one behind’, job space green recovery, sustainable and inclusive economies, she emphasizes the need for up-skilling and reskilling the labour force to keep up with the 4th industrial revolution towards sustainability. Looking specifically at the role of ESG reporting and green finance lead innovation, she explains the importance of the EU taxonomy and the creation of clusters on sustainability transition. https://www.aueb.gr/en/faculty_page/koundouri-phoebe Professor Koundouri holds a PhD and MPhil in Economics and Econometrics from the University of Cambridge (UK). She is listed in the 1% of most-cited women economists in the world, with 15 published books and more than 250 published scientific papers. Prof. Phoebe Koundouri is also the Founder and Scientific Director of the Research laboratory on Socio-Economic and Environmental Sustainability at AUEB and an affiliated Professor at the ATHENA Research and Innovation Center where she directs EIT Climate-KIC Hub Greece. She is also the co-chair of the UN Sustainable Development Network Greece, chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the International Centre for Research on the Environment and the Economy and of the scientific advisory board of the EU Forest Institute. Christian. Pastor. Transgender. Join us to hear from Dr. Paula Stone Williams about her experience journeying from male to female and from despair to joy.

As a father of three, married to a wonderful woman and holding several prominent jobs within the Christian community, Dr. Paula Stone Williams made the life-changing decision to physically transition from male to female at the age of sixty. Almost instantly, her power and influence in the evangelical world disappeared and her family had to grapple with intense feelings of loss and confusion.

Feeling utterly alone and at a loss after being expelled from the evangelical churches she had once spearheaded, Paula struggled to create a new safe space for herself where she could reconcile her faith, her identity, and her desire to be a leader. Much to her surprise, the key to her new career as a woman came with a deeper awareness of the inequities she had overlooked before her transition. Where her opinions were once celebrated and amplified, now she found herself sidelined and ignored. New questions emerged. Why are women’s opinions devalued in favor of men’s? Why does love and intimacy feel so different? And was it possible to find a new spirituality in her own image?

In her book As a Woman, Paula pulled back the curtain on her transition journey and shed light on the gendered landscape that impacts many in the LGBTQ+ community. Williams shares her lived experience of both genders and offers a truly unique perspective on the universal struggle to understand what it means to be male, female, and simply, human.

The western harvester ant is one of the most common and widespread ant species in North America, ranging from Canada to southern Arizona and from Kansas to Nevada. This ant is known for its large nest mounds, which are a prominent feature of desert grassland habitats. For the past 33 years, Blaine Cole has been studying a significant population of this ant species in Western Colorado. This Speaker Series presentation focuses on two key aspects of the ant's life cycle. First, we will explore how the production of a new queen leads to the formation of a new colony. Then, we will examine the factors that determine whether a colony will survive and mature into a reproductive colony that can last for decades. He received his bachelor’s degree in Systematics and Ecology from the University of Kansas and his Ph.D. from Princeton University. He was previously on the faculty at the University of Virginia and the University of Arizona. He has been on the editorial board of the American Naturalist and is a past president of the North American Section of the IUSSI. He began studying the behavior and ecology of ants during graduate school and his work morphed from the community ecology of ants, to the dynamics of social hierarchies within colonies, to the nonlinear dynamics of ant activity patterns. For the past 33 years, in collaboration with Diane Wiernasz, he has been studying the population biology of the western harvester ant, Pogonomyrmex occidentalis.

Back in 1963 when the Clean Air Act was written, legislators acknowledged that California was ahead of the curve and wrote a waiver into the law allowing the Golden State to set its own stricter standards. In 2018, that exception is being used in fighting—and so far winning—the loosening of national CAFE standards Join us for a conversation about the past, present and future of California’s leadership in environmental policy. We will look at the lessons—as laid out by David Vogel—offered by California to the nation and the world. What has worked and where has the state fallen short? And later in the show. . . Just ten years ago, an entire state running on 100 percent renewable electricity was considered fanciful. But this dreamy vision became reality when, with the backing of big utilities, California committed to 100 percent use of zero-carbon electricity by 2045.
