His actions focus on helping people to understand sustainable development and develop action in agriculture, food manufacturing and tourism. Small farmers are his heroes. In this talk Kostas shares very important information about the role of soil in combatting the GHGs that are causing global warming. He gives practical advice about how current agricultural practices must change. Kostas gives a snapshot view of a multi-stakeholder collaborative project on the island of Crete to boost sustainable food production practices. LFE is a Social Co-operative Enterprise situated in Heraklion, Crete, Greece. It mainly operates in the fields of: • Primary sector organizing • Foodstuffs companies’ organizing and development • Sustainable Tourism activities’ organizing and development During 2016-2019 he was the Chief Project Manager for the project “Crete: First steps towards a Sustainable Food Destination” Between 2004 – 2013: Gastronomic tourism networks on Crete, Kostas created networks among farmers which highlight the importance of Cretan diet. These networks were open to visits by guests and visitors to the island. Kostas studied Agricultural Development & Plant Production in the Agricultural University of Athens (1983-1990). He continued with a MSc degree in Ecological Agriculture in Wageningen Agricultural University in the Netherlands (1992-1993). 2004 he travelled to USA to be trained in Biointensive Farming by John Jeavons. Whilst the world is focussed on the pandemic, Prof. Koundouri reminds us to pay attention to the ‘mother of all crisis’, the climate crisis. She describes the urgent need to decarbonise national energy plans and presents technological pathways to enable decarbonisation. With the aim of ‘leaving no one behind’, job space green recovery, sustainable and inclusive economies, she emphasizes the need for up-skilling and reskilling the labour force to keep up with the 4th industrial revolution towards sustainability. On October 18 Dr. Sharon Blackie explored stories, myths, fairy tales, and archetypes illustrating the transformative potential of time spent in inner inquiry, and how doing so might help to shift the collective mindset. She highlighted ways of using the old stories to reflect on today's challenges. During this interactive session, we discussed how time spent in solitude and in nature helps us to listen, participate in a reciprocal relationship with the animate world we belong to, and to deepen our sense of kinship. The session concluded with the challenge to attendees: what are the foundational shifts we need to make to participate in the larger possibility of metamorphosis? Dr. Sharon Blackie is an award-winning writer, psychologist, and mythologist. Her highly acclaimed books, courses, lectures and workshops are focused on reimagining womens’ stories, and on the relevance of myths, fairy tales and folk traditions to the personal, cultural and environmental problems we face today. Stop me if you've heard this one: Alice Algae and Freddy Fungi took a LICHEN to each other. Lichens are unique organisms. Traditional definitions describe them as a close relationship of fungi (the mycobiont) living together with algae (the photobiont). The fungi protects the algae, and the algae uses photosynthesis to make food. Recent research, however, highlights that this symbiosis is far more complex than we thought. It turns out that there may be even more organisms involved, forming a micro-ecosystem in every lichen. Even though lichens are biologically fascinating and ecologically important, they are regularly overlooked. People often associate lichens with lush fairy-tale forests of the Pacific Northwest, where these organisms are large, conspicuous and abundant. But even in hostile desert habitats of the Southwest, lichens are an extremely diverse and very common element of the landscape. In fact, the Greater Sonoran Desert Region supports more than a third of all lichen species found on the North American continent. In this Speaker Series talk by lichen expert Dr. Frank Bungartz, learn all about what lichens are, what they look like and where they can be found, as well as the fundamental role they play in ecosystems. Dr. Bungartz will share his research on lichen diversity and function in the Sonoran regions, Galapagos, and Ecuador. Dr. Frank Bungartz is the Collections Manager of Lichens and Digital Data at the Lichen Herbarium of the Arizona State University Natural History Collections. His research focuses on biodiversity, evolution, ecology and conservation of lichenized fungi in the Sonoran Desert Region, Central America, and the Galapagos. He has been a contributor and editor to the Lichen Flora of the Greater Sonoran Desert Region and has published numerous treatments of lichens from the Galapagos, where he continues to work on a comprehensive inventory of the lichen biota of this archipelago. Dr. Bungartz always had a strong interest in how lichens affect rock surfaces that they grow on. With his graduate student Guillermo Ortiz, he has recently been using photogrammetry to create 3D models of lichen communities from high-resolution macro photos to better understand the dynamics of biodeterioration and biomineralization caused by these organisms.

Stand Down is an invitation to get traumatized Veterans off the street and back into their lives. It is a three day event that includes medical, dental, legal services but most inportantly, it restores Vets with a sense of community. Int he words of its founder Dr. John Natchison it is a drug free Woodstock music festival combined with Maslow's hierarchy of needs and a family picnic. A thousand Vets show up and 2,000 grateful volunteers welcome them. There are now over 300 Stand Down events in the US. Of the percent of citizens who sign up for the military Veterans disproportionately experience trauma, PTSD, substance abuse disorders and homelessness. Community and connection is the means to Veterans to recover their purpose and passion.

Amid an outcry over anti-Asian violence and harassment, filmmaker and writer Bee Vang turns the spotlight in Hollywood and its role in promulgating anti-Asian ideas. The son of immigrants, Hmong-American actor and activist Vang starred as Thao Vang Lor in Clint Eastwood's 2008 film Gran Torino and has appeared in "Modern Family" and Comisery. He has performed in independent films and on stage at Brown University, where he received a 2016 liberal arts degree in international politics, media and cultural studies. Vang worked at MSNBC with "The Rachel Maddow Show," at The Economist and at a research institute at Columbia University. After several years working as a print journalist, nonfiction writer and policy researcher, he recently moved to Los Angeles to devote himself to acting, filmmaking and other creative pursuits. Turns out, this is an emerging area of research in neuroscience. Burcin Ikiz is a neuroscientist who will break down how climate change can be a contributing factor to some of the common medical diagnoses across the lifespan. Because the climate change is still a relatively new area for neuroscientists to explore, Burcin believed that there will be more information for all to know in the years and decades to come. Today, humans will extract almost 100 million barrels of oil from the Earth, and roughly equivalent amounts of coal and natural gas. In the latest IPCC 1.5 degree report, the deadline for halving this extractive flow of fossil fuels is 2030, and eliminating it is 2050. Can we clean up these massive veins of fossil fuel energy in time to prevent irreversible climate damage? Do we have the technologies we need to scale up in time? The challenge of the energy transition is multifaceted – from providing zero-carbon fuels for ships to providing heat in our homes. These various demands require energy at different scales, in different places, and at different times. Eliminating our dependence on fossil fuels is not trivial, but one important, scalable technology is green ammonia. This carbon-free fuel is made from just air, water, and renewable electricity. That is it. Three ingredients: N2 from air, H2O, and renewable electricity. Fundamentally carbon-free. How close are we to deploying this technology? Announced investments for scaling it up are already in the billions of dollars, led by the Middle East and Australia looking to export their sunshine. What is this new 21st century oil? And what changes will it bring to our world? Zac Cesaro is an R&D engineer for Siemens Energy and third year DPhil in Engineering Science at the University of Oxford. He is an expert in “green” ammonia production and use and has two years of experience operating the world’s first roundtrip green ammonia demonstrator at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire, UK. His DPhil in Systems Engineering focuses on modelling the role of green ammonia in decarbonised electricity grids of the future, specifically in India. Prior to starting his DPhil, Zac completed a BSc in Chemical Engineering at Cornell University and worked as a manufacturing consultant in Boston, USA for 1.5 years. Climate change is the greatest crisis that has ever threatened humanity, and we have very little time to counteract it. Researchers say that we still have about 9 years to get on the right track. By 2030 we must have reduced global CO2 emissions by at least 50%. Can digitalization help us to exponentially reduce our emissions in this short period of time that we have? Although digitization is shaping all our lives like no other, it has hardly played a role in climate policy discussions to date. Nick Nuttall is International Strategic Communications Director of Earth Day Network and the climate social platform We Don't Have Time and has over 18 years of experience working with the United Nations (UN). In his talk, Nick Nuttall highlights the opportunities of digitalization for sustainable development: from tools that fish plastic from the sea to concepts that use the energy of the seas to produce clean electricity. He sees digital technology as a vital tool in the fight against climate change but warns against seeing digitization per se as a cure-all. Digitalization can only be part of the solution when used wisely and with the right approach. Nick Nuttall is currently both International Strategic Communications Director of Earth Day Network and the climate social platform We Don't Have Time and has over 18 years of experience working with the United Nations (UN). Nick joined the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in January 2014 where he was the spokesperson for securing the climate agreement at the 2015 UN Climate Change Conference in Paris. Nick was also Director of Communications and Spokesperson for the 2018 Global Climate Action Summit (GCAS) in San Francisco, CA. Before his work at the UN, he was the award-winning Environment and Technology correspondent for The Times of London. In his talk Nick deals with the question how we can make digitalization work to overcome the damaging trends of global challenges like climate change to biodiversity loss.
