Researchers Anna Michalak, Tom Bridgeman, and Pete Richards are studying how farming practices and severe weather can increase the amount of fertilizer-derived nutrients in the water, which diminishes water quality and threatens the lake's ecosystem and the public's health.

We are at a choice point for humanity. As social and ecological crises escalate globally, it is clear that the dominant cultural worldview, informed by colonization, patriarchy, capitalism, and racism is displaying a relationship with Nature and each other that is devastatingly unjust and out of balance.

To live in a healthy and equitable world, we must fundamentally change how we respect and interact with the Earth and one another. To change the present and future, it is imperative to change the narrative and amplify worldviews and stories of solutions that transform the dominant worldview from an extractivist, colonial paradigm of exploit and extract to a thriving, globally-conscious one of respect and restore.

During this event, movement leaders and change-makers wove together stories, worldviews, and experiences of restoration and justice that demonstrate the world we know is possible and needed. We knew in our bones this time was coming. And now we must act in solidarity more than ever, as we continue building a powerful movement founded on principles of justice, love, and a fierce dedication to our planet and our communities.

This event was both a fundraiser for Sogorea Te’ Land Trust and the launch of the book by Osprey Orielle Lake, "The Story is in Our Bones: How Worldviews and Climate Justice Can Remake a World in Crisis." All book proceeds at this event will be donated to Sogorea Te’ Land Trust to support the powerful work of Corrina Gould and her leadership in the urban Indigenous women-led land trust based in the San Francisco Bay Area that facilitates the return of Indigenous land to Indigenous people.

On November 18, WECAN hosted a COP29 press conference where women leaders spoke about the importance of advancing a fossil fuel phaseout and embracing a Just Transition that supports communities and ecosystems. Speakers highlighted the role of climate finance in supporting equitable solutions and ensuring accountability in the Just Transition. Speakers also discussed the efforts of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Speakers included: Eriel Tchekwie Deranger (Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation), Executive Director of Indigenous Climate Action, Canada; Dr. Amiera Sawas, Head of Research and Policy at the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty; and Osprey Orielle Lake, Executive Director of the Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN), USA.

We are willing to endlessly fight for policies that prioritize social, racial and economic justice, and Indigenous and human rights."

Our communities and the planet are out of time, we need climate justice now! On October 26, Osprey Orielle Lake, WECAN Executive Director spoke out to world governments at an urgent one-day High-level Thematic Debate entitled “Delivering Climate Action: for People, Planet & Prosperity” at the UN Headquarters in New York. The event was hosted by the UN President of the General Assembly to call for hope and ambition in the lead up to COP26.
Osprey made it clear in her intervention today: No more sacrifice people, no more sacrifice zones. She spoke to world governments asking: Where are the government leaders willing to stand up to the fossil fuel industry? And, where is the $100 billion a year promised from wealthy countries so we can move toward a just transition? We can move billions once we claim a global climate emergency — and pulling from military budgets is a good place to begin.

Right now, current country commitments bring global warming to 2.7 degrees Celsius, far past the 1.5 degree target laid out in the Paris Climate Agreement. Osprey called for an end to false solutions and presented our Call to Action that was recently delivered to governments during the UNGA by Global Women’s Assembly for Climate Justice. It is a call to action from women and feminist around the world representing millions of people outlining in explicit detail what can be done to meet the 1.5 degree target with already existing climate justice frameworks.

On November 5, Osprey Orielle Lake, WECAN Executive Director, spoke to Parliament Ministers from around the world and other global leaders at the GLOBE COP26 Legislators Summit held at the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh, Scotland.

In her speech, Osprey called for no more false solutions, and advocated for climate justice, community-led solutions, Indigenous rights, keeping fossil fuels in the ground, and further inclusion of frontline leadership and women in decision making processes.
