The panel “Women For Forests: Protection & Reforestation: Part 1” took place on Monday, June 23, 2025. It was part of the Global Women’s Assembly for Climate Justice: Path to COP30 and Beyond, hosted by the Women’s Earth and Climate Network (WECAN) from June 23-28, 2025.

Organized by WECAN, the Assembly united over 125 grassroots and frontline women leaders, global advocates, and policymakers from 50 countries. Diverse panelists, including Indigenous leaders and climate activists from various regions, shared visions and strategies across 25 unique sessions to accelerate a transformative path towards a healthy and just world.

The Global Women's Assembly for Climate Justice, hosted by the Women's Earth and Climate Network (WECAN) from June 23-28, 2025, featured a key panel: "Building a Healthy & Thriving Future: Food Sovereignty."

This panel brought together diverse global leaders, including Kahea Pacheco (Kanaka ʻŌiwi), Mariann Bassey Orovwuje, Monique Verdin (Houma Nation), Wilma Mendoza (Mosetén), and Yasso Kanti Bhattachan (Thakali). The Assembly united over 125 grassroots women leaders, advocates, and policymakers from 50 countries, sharing visions and strategies for a just and healthy world across 25 unique panels.

This session explores how the circular economy can tackle climate change. Discussions cover regenerative agriculture, connecting smallholder farms to industrial supply chains, and the food system's transformation, with insights from Nestlé and Unilever leaders. Dr. Mehaffy is an internationally recognized urban development researcher, educator, and consultant. He directs the Sustasis Foundation, an Oregon non-profit focused on urban issues, and has held academic appointments in seven countries. His experience includes consulting for Portland and Metro, teaching at the University of Oregon, and managing the pioneering Orenco Station transit-oriented development.

With a keen interest in Portland's urban successes and lessons, Dr. Mehaffy considers the city a second home, though he now lives in the Columbia Gorge.

Global Fishing Watch (GFW), a free online tool from Oceana, SkyTruth, and Google, reveals the apparent fishing activity of over 35,000 commercial vessels globally. Regularly updated with data since 2012, GFW publicly shares vital information to enhance ocean health, support fishery management, and combat illegal fishing. This revolutionary tool empowers governments, journalists, and citizens to track vessels, enforce rules, and protect marine ecosystems.

GFW uses public Automatic Identification System (AIS) data, collected by satellite and terrestrial receivers. Over 20 million data points are added daily, enabling GFW to track vessel movement and classify it as "fishing" or "non-fishing" activity.

Dr. Andrew Steer, President and CEO of the World Resources Institute (WRI), highlights the evolving global economy, stating, "We have a window of opportunity to break through that inertia." WRI is a global research organization with over 1000 experts working in more than 80 countries, including offices across Brazil, China, India, and the United States.

With a PhD in economics, Dr. Steer brings extensive experience from the World Bank, where he served as Special Envoy for Climate Change and held other senior roles. He is also a Commissioner for the Global Commission on Adaptation, a Global Agenda Trustee for the World Economic Forum, and a member of several key environmental and development initiatives.
