Rapid decarbonisation of western lifestyles is essential if we are to avoid catastrophic climate change. In order to achieve this we need to mobilise communities around the issue and create compelling future visions for new lifestyles that enhance planetary health. This talk uses ideas developed from the EU funded project CityZEN to develop a methodology to engage citizens in envisioning a shared view of carbon-free future. From this future vision, through a visualisation of the carbon produced by each person, a series of design moves can be developed that create a dramatic change in consumption, through changes in urban space, mobility and energy use. The new neighbourhood future is bio-diverse, carbon friendly, economically prosperous and socially connected. Greg Keeffe is an academic and urban designer with over 30 years experience in sustainability, energy use and its impact on the design of built form and urban space. He is Professor of Sustainable Architecture and Head of the School of Natural and Built Environment at Queens University Belfast. Greg has extensive experience of working closely with architects and planners to develop exciting ways of re-invigorating the city through the application of innovative sustainable technologies, informing his work on the sustainable city as synergistic super-organism. In this way, he has sought to develop a series of theoretical hypotheses about our future existence on the planet, through a series of technological and spatial interventions. Most of his work comes out of a free-thinking open-ended discussion about how things should be. Red states, blue states – when it comes to our environment, are we really two different Americas? New Yorker writer Eliza Griswold and UC Berkeley professor Arlie Hochschild both traveled outside of their comfort zones, immersing themselves in communities that many liberals dismiss as ‘Trump country.’ But it’s time to get beyond the stereotypes, says Griswold. “I think ‘Trump country’ is a dangerous stupid moniker we shouldn't use anymore,” she tells the Climate One audience. “It just allows us to write off wide swaths of America.” Griswold spent time in southwestern Pennsylvania to tell the story of a family living on the front lines of the fracking boom. Hochschild traveled to rural Louisiana to escape what she calls the “bubble” of coastal thinking. “Let me get into a bubble that is as far right as Berkeley, California is on the left -- and take my alarm system off,” Hochschild laughs. Both writers emerged with books that paint an honest portrait of a misunderstood America. Changing climate hurts farming communities, but using tech, Bayu, and his agribusiness startup Msmb Indonesia can drive down production costs and help local farmers compete.⁣ After finishing his Ph.D. at Iwate University, specializing in agro-climatology, environmental sciences, and climate change, Bayu Dwi Apri Nugroho is now an Associate Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, Fac. Of Agricultural Technology UGM as well as the co-founder of Indonesia's frontier startup on precision farming.⁣ Using sensors and drones, the startup covers all farmer needs upstream to downstream, from land mapping to market analysis. With the use of machine learning, the farm condition could be translated into a recommendation that can be understood by the farmers.⁣ The startup has helped farmers in regions stretching from Sumatra Utara to Nusa Tenggara Barat, with collaborations coming from SOHO, Asian Development Bank (ADB), Beppenas, Kominfo, KemenPUPR, Kementan, Kominfo, Kemenko Perekonomian, BNI, BRI, BCA and Japfa.⁣ The app RiTX developed by the company received a Certificate of Merit from Asia Smart App Awards 2019 Hong Kong and saw publication in Tech in Asia and e27. Starting from a concern to develop corps farming technique in Indonesia has influenced Bayu to conduct in-depth research the correlation between Indonesia climate, sensor system and efficiency resources automation to produce maximum harvest result. With a dream the technology can be a smart automation solution for Indonesia farmers.
