Climate change will continue to increase our risks to extreme weather events. Businesses and communities are looking to understand what to expect in terms of damages, added expenses, and lost revenues in the coming decades. What is the cost of doing nothing in the face of climate change? We have the resources to explore this question - check out the State of Colorado's Future Avoided Cost Explorer (FACE:Hazards). By understanding the dollar value price tag of future extreme weather events, we can make the financial case for investing in our resilience. This information will help us make data-driven decisions that will ultimately save money and help prevent hardships for our communities and economies. Ryan Spies is a Water Resources Scientist with Lynker, LLC in Boulder, Colorado. Ryan specializes in hydro-data analysis and climate-informed impact assessments. Ryan recently led a team of scientists, engineers, and economists on a first of its kind project for the state of Colorado to quantify economic impacts from future climate conditions and population growth. Ryan also enjoys creating interactive data visualizations to communicate environmental data. Having worked for both the public and private sectors, Ryan has conducted flood modeling studies throughout the United States. Ryan is actively involved with projects applying remote sensing applications and sustainable water resources planning. One of Ryan’s biggest passions as a scientist is working with communities and stakeholders to translate complex model outputs into actionable information. Outside of work, Ryan also enjoys fly-fishing, baseball, and hiking in the Rocky Mountains with his wife and daughter. As the world wakes up to our current crises of litter pollution, we are forced to look at the way we live and rethink the solutions we have. Ryan's building a scheme that has been moulded by learning from the behaviours that encourage the problem and applies that knowledge to a solution that's accessible to everyone. With the aim of launching CLEAN hubs in every city of the UK, he is empowering individuals and groups to be the difference they want to see in a cleaner more sustainable environment. Ryan started his journey against litter pollution around two years ago when he began to notice litter along our roads whilst working on the railway up and down the UK. He realised he had to try do something about it and it had to be something everyone could get on board with. Being a town councillor, he aims to work with other councils and community groups in launching his initiative across the UK. Dr Ryan Allard focuses on climate change solutions as Senior Fellow at Project Drawdown, but he also flies in planes and eats meat. Is it possible to care for the climate and environment while still being part of the problem? Dr Allard walks us through how he questions his own behavior and how he answers it with a simplified way of looking at our daily choices. Ryan Allard is a transportation analyst with broad knowledge of transportation systems and their impact on climate. His specialties include passenger intermodality, intercity transport, competitive issues in transportation, and cooperation among transportation systems, on which he has published peer-reviewed research and presented at international conferences. In the past, Ryan worked as a consultant, aiding in the development of more effective government and state agencies. He has a PhD and MSc in Transportation Systems Analysis from the University of Lisbon, and a BS in Aerospace Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
