On November 12, 2020, the Reconciling Ways of Knowing Forum, with the Victoria Forum, hosted "Millennia of Experience: Drawing on Indigenous Knowledge in Responding to COVID-19." This dialogue explored how Indigenous knowledge and science can improve public health outcomes. First Nations communities notably experienced significantly lower COVID-19 infection (1/4) and mortality (1/5) rates.

Speakers discussed how Indigenous Peoples leveraged millennia of experience from past pandemics, using sovereignty and traditional medicines to protect communities and foster resilience. The session highlighted how Indigenous approaches mitigated negative health outcomes despite systemic challenges and marginalization, offering lessons for collaboration.

Francesco Lapenta, Founding Director of JCU's Institute of Future and Innovation Studies, describes the paradox of energy-driven progress and shortsighted innovation. He argues that solving the climate crisis requires collaborative governance and socially responsible energy innovation. Developed nations, having benefited most and polluted most, must lead in sustainable energy solutions and offer equitable alternatives to developing countries.

Lapenta emphasizes that universities must cultivate leaders who understand the shared responsibility for humanity's future. The JCU Institute supports this by promoting international collaboration and transdisciplinary research on high-impact innovations, aiming for accountability and good governance. Last year, Dejah Powell founded Get Them to the Green (G2G) to foster environmental passion among Chicago youth, especially youth of color. G2G's first initiative was a summer camp, engaging 14 young people in environmental justice, sustainability, and food agriculture.

G2G has since partnered with Gardenneers to build a school garden at Powell’s elementary school, providing hands-on outdoor education. The organization also conducts environmental education workshops throughout the city.

Now a Cornell senior, Powell believes understanding environmental problems is key to solving them. She hopes urban environmental education will improve eco-literacy and help under-resourced communities access vital local and global conversations.

FFNAU is Arizona's sole divestment campaign, distinguished by its community partnerships. Gonzalez has fostered this by collaborating with the Black Mesa Water Coalition, an Indigenous environmental organization. Together, they advocate for university investment in Navajo Nation sustainability projects. Karina also coordinates a United Nations youth delegate leadership program.
