As Canadian forests burn out of control, clouds of hazardous smoke shift with the wind, affecting first Northeastern and then Midwestern parts of the United States. The #AirQuality varies, but the tiny particles that it contains pose serious health risks to the lungs, heart and even the brain. Climate Change is making the weather unpredictable. Canadian trees, hit by an ice storm in April, lost branches which then provided ready tinder for fire. Drought made it worse. At least 17 million tons of CO2 have been released by the #Wildfires so far. Paul Beckwith and Patrick Hogan explain why the air quality created by smoke is a serious problem, that is likely to affect more forests as the atmosphere continues to heat. As the smoke hit Washington DC, legislators had a taste of the effects of the climate crisis, something akin to what happened in the 1930s #Dustbowl. As grit came into their chamber, the legislature took action then. But will this event move the dial at all? Consumer sentiment began to trend away from disposable packaging — particularly single-use plastics — over the past few years, as images of waterways choked in waste circulated in the media. Then came the novel coronavirus, and with it a resurgence in single-use systems. Knowing the coronavirus can survive on surfaces, many assume single-use items are inherently safer than reusable alternatives, but are they really? For Plastic-Free July, we’ll take a closer look at a circular model that ensures health and hygiene while providing an alternative to single-use. On July 22 at 2 p.m. ET, 3BL Media will join Anthony Rossi, vice president of global business development for the reusable packaging platform Loop, and Patrick Browne, director of global sustainability for Loop’s logistics partner, UPS. We’ll talk about what’s new with Loop, often dubbed the “21st-century milkman,” in the time of COVID-19 and explore how circular systems like these can change mindsets and avoid a backslide on plastic waste generation.

Dr Lindsay Murray’s talk will highlight examples of the impact of climate change, largely through human activity, on wildlife and, using the experience of the ‘anthropause’ during lockdown as a catalyst, aim to encourage a call to action towards greener, wilder and more respectful ways of co-existing with other species in nature for the shared benefit of all. Dr Lindsay Murray is a Senior Lecturer in Animal Psychology at the University. Her research interests are predominantly in primatology, particularly personality, laterality, social behaviour and self-recognition, but also extend to wider aspects of animal behaviour, including elephant grief and ecotourism involving brown bears. She is on the Council of the Primate Society of Great Britain and the Education Committee of the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour, and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. On June 21, 2017, on the summer solstice & National Aboriginal Day (Canada), Turtle Lodge Elders, four youth torch runners, four water carriers & the drum group Red Shadow Singers from the Original Nations of this land lit a sacred fire at the sacred site of Manitou Api in the centre of the continent. The flame was brought to Winnipeg and the Centennial Flame lit by Elder Dave Courchene, where it will burn in front of the Manitoba Legislative Building for one year, to help inspire the province and the nation. The 2017 Canada Games torch run commenced with this sacred flame in Manitoba, and the sacred fire was brought Friday to light the 2017 Canada Games cauldron.
