They grow to be about 6.5 inches tall, just a little bit longer than a dollar bill. These are tiny, tiny owls. But don't let their size fool you: They are also fierce as hell, often taking down prey twice their size, like Gambel's quail. Managing this waste is costly, meaning that it is often simply dumped, leading to carbon emissions, pollution and vermin. Insects could offer a holistic issue to the challenge of urban organic waste. Their efficiency in safely converting organic waste into food, feed and nutrient-rich compost is well-proven. In this film, we hear from two companies, Sanergy and InsectiPro, about how insects can transform waste into profits and how soil fertility can be a key component of a circular economy for food in cities. To learn more about the wildlife featured in the episode, visit www.defenders.org/wildlifenation Video Transcript: Jeff Corwin: I'm in the beautiful state of Florida, seeing how conservation efforts are working to bring back the American crocodile from the brink of extinction. We are on our way to the Turkey Point nuclear power plant. It's the sixth largest power plant in the United States, and it provides power to the entire southern half of Florida. But it also plays an even more powerful role in the survival of the American crocodile. Jeff Corwin: This is Mike Lloret and he's a wildlife biologist, and he works with Florida Power & Light. And of course, this is Elizabeth from Defenders of Wildlife. And this is all about these most extraordinary creatures, American crocodiles. Elizabeth, they have quite a powerful story, don't they, in North America? Elizabeth Fleming: Yes, they do. They've really had a terrific success story through many decades of conservation effort. Jeff Corwin: And of course, Florida Power & Light and Turkey Point has been a big part of this nuclear headstart program. And I mean that in the best sense of the description, because it's almost like you guys have been able to launch the re-survival of this species, the re-wilding of this species. What made this such a success? Mike Lloret: We have 6,000 acres here. It ended up being fantastic habitat for the American crocodile. The crocodiles come here. We collect the babies. We monitor the adults and we release everybody back into the wild. Jeff Corwin: The power plant is cooled by a massive network of canals that cover 10 square miles and borders a large wildlife reserve. Conservationists have discovered that these canals make the ideal habitat for crocodile nests. Jeff Corwin: So because this is a secure facility providing energy for millions of people in Florida, it's protected. So you have security which protects the crocodiles. Jeff Corwin: American crocodiles almost were extinct due to hunting and habitat loss. At one point, unfortunately,  there were only 100 adult crocodiles left. But thanks to the Endangered Species Act  and organizations, like our sponsor Defenders of Wildlife, they have made an important comeback. There are now over 2,000 American crocodiles surviving in Southern Florida.  Jeff Corwin: Elizabeth, why is it important that we protect crocodiles? Elizabeth Fleming: Because they're part of the natural system in Florida. We have some of the greatest biological diversity in the entire country, and it's because we have so many species like this. Every single one is important. Everyone has a role in the ecosystem and with their loss, it's a loss to us. Mike Lloret: The crocodiles are one of our apex predators down here in south Florida. So we know if there're more crocodiles, that the rest of the ecosystem is doing well. Jeff Corwin: If they're protected, the birds, the fish, the turtles, the plants, all of that gets protected as well. Mike, so what do we need to accomplish today? Mike Lloret: So today we are tagging these baby hatchlings. We are collecting biometric data, which is important to understand the population health of these little guys. And then we're releasing them back into the wild. Jeff Corwin: First off, we measure the crocodile hatchlings. Jeff Corwin: Snout 12.8 centimeters.   Jeff Corwin: Then we get their weight. Jeff Corwin: 58.7 grams there. Jeff Corwin: In order to identify each crocodile in the future, we insert a small microchip called a PIT tag, just under the skin. When it is scanned, it will reveal the identification number of this particular crocodile. Mike Lloret: Now we're going to cut a unique SKU clip number into his tail. Jeff Corwin: My buddy Mike also makes a small incision in the crocodile's scales, according to a specific number pattern. This way, along with the PIT tag, they can be identified for the rest of their lives. But don't worry, it doesn't hurt. Jeff Corwin: Okay there my friends, so we have ourselves a bucket of amazing American crocodiles. And if you thought this was cool, now they're going back home. Elizabeth Fleming: Absolutely. Jeff Corwin: All right, let's do it. Jeff Corwin: We head to the wildlife sanctuary in Turkey Point to return them back to the wild. Jeff Corwin: All right, here we go. This is what it's all about. Alexandra Morel will explore the topic of environmental change, relating to her expertise on the field of forests and their significance in the world. Dr. Alexandra Morel is a post-doctoral researcher in the School of Geography and the Environment at the University of Oxford. She has been enamoured with tropical forests since spending a semester in Costa Rica as an undergraduate and has been fortunate to perform research in the tropical forests of Malaysian Borneo, Ghana and Ethiopia. Her most recent research is focused on the interface of tropical forest ecology and smallholder agriculture, particularly relating to the ecological limits of poverty alleviation (www.ecolimits.org) as well as the important role ‘intact forests’ play in maintaining the global provision of ecosystem services (www.eci.ox.ac.uk/if21/). Her PhD research involved linking field measurements of forests with satellite imagery to estimate the carbon emissions from industrial-scale commodity production and the international governance efforts underway to control this forest loss. She has also worked on mapping human-environment coupled vulnerability in Haiti, the environmental sustainability of biofuel production in India and estimating the carbon-savings from forest conservation in a protected area in Ethiopia. A common thread throughout her research has been gaining a better understanding of the importance of forests both for mitigating climate change and for supporting our adaptation to it, which is an objective she plans to continue to pursue into the future. What are the impacts of climate change that are felt around the world? How are people responding? And what is the role of today's youth in all of this? Julia Blocher, researcher at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and President of the International Youth Federation (IYF), breaks all of it down for us. She illustrates several concrete events which are causing people to migrate and leave their homes, but also highlighting to the stories of several young people that are making real change. Striving for a future which is just, peaceful and inclusive is not impossibile with this new generation of leaders. Julia Blocher is a researcher at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and President of the International Youth Federation (IYF). She has worked for a decade on the interaction between climate change and the many factors that influence the movement of people and communities. She believes that there are two main development issues facing the global community for which youth lead the way in providing solutions: climate change and migration. In her work as a doctoral researcher at PIK and as an Associate Member of the Hugo Observatory (Belgium), her studies focus on environment, climate change, and migration linkages in the East and Horn of Africa and in island nations. Prior to joining PIK, Ms. Blocher was a Project Manager at the United Nations University Centre for Policy Research in New York (UNU-CPR), a think tank within the UN system. Technology is in large part about shaping our environment and surroundings to suit our needs. Securing such basic human requirements such as shelter, food and water, health and community, have driven the rise of civilization and technological progress – but in many cases we have learned that this progress has come at a cost to the environment. Anisotropy, the variation of material properties with direction, plays important role in choosing our technologies. Not only can nature surprise us when we take the basic analytical action of splitting materials and systems along directions of anisotropy, but we can also find ways to achieve our technological goals more easily and with less cost to the environment than when trying to do all the work ourselves. While it won’t help us solve all of our problems, asking if there is an easier and more natural direction to pull in can lead us to better and more sustainable solutions in the future. Tim Booth, associate professor at the Department of Physics at DTU. His current research interests revolve around 2D materials, its synthesis’ techniques and future application in new technologies. “Technology is in large part about shaping our environment and surroundings to suit our needs. Cities will be the driving force for action on climate change in this decade, as local solutions are developed to protect communities, systems and the economy from the effects of our changing climate. Belfast’s Commissioner for Resilience, Grainia Long, outlines the strength of collaboration across the city, the practical solutions being developed, and how this decade will truly be a milestone for global ambition, with local delivery! Grainia Long is Commissioner for Resilience for the city of Belfast, based in Belfast City Council. Her role was created following Belfast’s membership of the global 100 Resilient Cities network, funded by the Rockefeller Foundation. Previous to this, she was Chief Executive of the national child protection charity in the Republic of Ireland, ISPCC Childline. This position followed several years working in housing, including as Chief Executive of the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH), and previously National Director of the CIH in Northern Ireland. She has served two terms as a member of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission, was a member of the Lyons Commission on Housing Supply and Advisor to the Best Commission on the Future of Housing in Northern Ireland. She is currently Chair of Metropolitan Thames Valley Housing Trust, a social housing provider in England, and Senior Independent Director on MTVH Group Board. Ryan Camero’s hometown of Stockton, CA has its share of social challenges — poverty, violence, and drug abuse to name a few. To make sense of these challenges, Camero began looking at organizations that were building resilience in Stockton. In 2010 He started volunteering with Restore the Delta, a grassroots group committed to restoring the Sacramento-San Joaquin delta which is significant for its ecological and agricultural value. Camero’s work with the group, where he’s now officially employed, helped him understand the trials of a community facing both a drought and water privatization. Meanwhile, his interest in storytelling through art connected him to the Beehive Collective, an activist art collective. In 2014, with the help of information and resources from Restore the Delta and Food and Water Watch, Camero helped conceptualize and create an interactive presentation that drew parallels between corporate efforts to privatize California’s water and peoples’ struggles against large-scale infrastructure projects throughout Mesoamerica. The presentation, called “Sucked Dry” included intricate graphics created by the Beehive Collective. Last fall, Camero led a three-week tour, travelling to 18 California cities, presenting Sucked Dry to local audiences and facilitating discussions about the fragile Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta ecosystem. Camero’s understanding of the intersectional relationship between social, environmental, and economic inequities continues to guide his role as a cross-pollinator as he creates collaborations across organizations and groups with unique missions yet common goals.
