Generalist, or specialist? Whatever your stance, the SDGs are your business. When it comes to taking action on the SDGs, the deep impact on a single goal or superficial impact on a range of them can lead to an unproductive tradeoff and mitigate real progress. We gathered B Lab’s Insights team, researchers studying the B Corp movement, and B Corp leaders to explore why real progress toward the SDGs will require the concerted efforts of generalized specialists across sectors, framed by a critical research paper published earlier this year. When climate activists say that you shouldn't eat so much meat, consume new clothes, drive cars, use plastic, or cut down forests, it’s seen as a direct offense to what we've been taught all of our lives - that we can dream and grow without limits. Shyla Raghav re-imagines climate change by showing us everything we gain by making the seemingly impossible decisions that we face today - and how we can turn offense, anger, fear, and helplessness into determination to confront the climate emergency. Shyla Raghav is Conservation International’s leading expert on the impact of climate change on people and nature across the globe. Shyla played an integral role in getting the Paris Agreement signed by 195 countries and has been instrumental in influencing international climate policy for over a decade. Shyla has also worked at the World Bank, Adaptation Fund, United Nations Development Programmme, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. At Conservation International, she finds nature-based solutions to fight climate change and ensures they are incorporated into policies. From both California and northern India, Shyla studied applied ecology and international relations at the University of California, Irvine and earned her master’s degree in environmental management from Yale University. She has worked on both climate change mitigation and adaptation – and is a key communicator in the climate movement. She was recently named one of InStyle’s BadAss Women last year. Later, Jeff works with biologists to manage a delicate population of black-footed ferrets, a species once believed to be extinct. Jeff discovers how wild bison play a vital role in ferret survival and the survival of the Great Plains themselves. Tune in to hear inspiring insights on why #digitalskills is important for young #women and girls to become shapers of the digital world & what initiatives have proven successful in supporting them - bit.ly/3LorHjR Each year, the International Day of Girls in ICT is celebrated to raise awareness about the gender digital divide and to support skills development and technology education for girls and young women toward education and professional careers in STEM fields, particularly within the ICT sector. The Girls in ICT celebrations aim at inspiring and encouraging girls to pursue a future in ICTs and to empower them by ensuring they have the necessary skills, confidence, and support to achieve their goals. On 27 April, the European Celebration are live. Under the theme ‘Digital Skills for Life’, the event gathers women in Europe from across sectors to share how tech skills for women and girls can scale to close the gender digital divide and bring greater benefit to society and the economy. It provides role models and an opportunity to inspire young people to join tech studies and careers, examples of initiatives to support women in ICT, and programs that interested persons can take part in to boost their knowledge of the field. The textiles industry remains anchored in the linear take-make-waste economy. According to the European Environment Agency, the sector has the fourth most significant impact on primary resource materials and water after food, housing and transport. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation has recently set out five universal circular economy policy goals around which governments and businesses can align to scale the circular economy. One goal is to ‘make the economics work’ by creating economic incentives and setting regulatory requirements that enable circular economy business models (such as resale, rental and repair) to become the norm rather than the exception. How can this be achieved in the fashion and textiles sector? These are the highlights from the episode that was streamed live on our channels on 27th April.
