The clean energy transition, often associated with the affluent, is fundamentally a civil rights issue. Communities of color disproportionately suffer from toxic pollution near factories and refineries, leading African Americans and Latinos to express greater concern about climate change than whites.

Despite this critical link, environmental movements frequently lack diversity and struggle to engage these communities. We delve into these challenges with hip hop artist and activist Mystic, civil rights hero Rev. Gerald Durley, and civil rights lawyer Ingrid Brostrom.

On November 28, 2015, at Turtle Lodge in Sagkeeng First Nation, Manitoba, Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers presented The Great Binding Law. This significant presentation, led by Anishinabe, Nehetho (Cree), and Dakota representatives, responded to the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs' request for guidance on the National Energy Board's pipeline proposals.

The Elders, including Oshoshko Bineshiikwe (Blue Thunderbird Woman) and Nii Gaani Aki Inini (Dave Courchene), shared their wisdom. A video of part of their presentation is available, though sacred ceremonies were not recorded. Symon Ptashnick filmed the event.

This initiative follows a White House-recognized Social Responsibility Program, which McDonald's, Subway, Burger King, and Taco Bell have already joined. These companies pay an extra penny per pound of tomatoes to raise wages and commit to sourcing from farms that respect workers' rights.
